Reaping The Benefits Of Ramadan

Sensing the unity of the Muslims
The Prophet (may Allaah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, " Those of you who will live after me will see many differences. Then you must cling to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided khaleefahs. Hold fast to it and stick to it." (Aboo Daawood) In this month we sense that there is a possibility for unity, because we all fast together, we break fast together, we all worship Allah together, and we pray Salaatul-`Eid together. Therefore we sense that the unity of Muslims is possible. It is possible for Muslims to be a single body, but this will only be achieved when obedience is only to Allaah and His Messenger.

Learning discipline
The Prophet (may Allaah send His blessing and peace upon him) made us adhere to discipline and strictness, strictness that does not lead to fanaticism or going outside the bounds that Allaah has laid down. One cannot knowingly break the fast before the sunset, as this will not be accepted by Allaah. Muslims should learn to be very strict in their lives, because they are people of an important message, which they mold their lives around.

THREE TYPES OF FAST
Imaam Ghazzaalee divides fast into three groups;

(1) Fast of the layman. This is of a very inferior nature, for he refrains not, save from eating, drinking and sex relations.

(2) Fast of a comparatively "spiritually superior" person. Such a person protects the eyes, tongue and ears as well, from unrighteous acts, such as mentioned in the above Tradition narrated by Hazrat Abu Hurairah (R.A.).

(3) Fast of those who have attained the highest spiritual order. These are the Auleyaa Allah (i.e. the saints of Allah). They have the fullest control over their thoughts too. They are absorbed, soul, mind and body in the meditation of the Infinite Being and give not the slightest thought to their worldly affairs. They have entrusted themselves, soul, mind and body into the hands of Allah. A mere thought of "Ghairullaah" (i.e. anything besides Allah), though permissible in Shara, is liable to break their fast. Thus this type of fast is the most superior of all.

May Allah grant us ail this spiritual stage, by the dint of His infinite mercy and absorb us in His Infinite Being, soul, mind and body, Ameen.
