Re: Arsenal The Gunners
How Wenger got it all wrong with Porto rant, plus Chelsea will KO Jose and Pompey are setting a dangerous precedent
By Mark Lawrenson
Published 23:01 19/02/10
Arsene Wenger launched an amazing rant at Swedish referee Martin Hansson after Arsenal's defeat in Porto.
But Wenger should question his own players as to why Sol Campbell and then Lukasz Fabianski didn't just clear the ball.
Then, what makes Porto's quickly taken free kick different from when Thierry Henry scored against Chelsea with a similar set piece? Didn't everyone say back then that Arsenal and Henry showed great forethought and skill?
But even more than that, the point that has been missed is that the referee did not punish Porto's players for literally taking it in turns to hack, kick and foul Cesc Fabregas.
One after the other and, in all, about six Porto players scythed and fouled Fabregas which was a real disgrace.
**
Jose Mourinho finally comes up against his former club Chelsea in what will be a cracking Champions League encounter.
Inter Milan are not top, streets ahead in Serie A for nothing. They are a quality side who will make it tough for Chelsea.
But ultimately, Chelsea will come through. A lot of players have got a lot to prove against their former manager.
There is nothing like facing an ex-boss and saying: "This is why you signed me and I'll show you just how good I am."
It will be a fascinating contest and Mourinho will make it pure theatre.
**
Portsmouth will have set a dangerous precedent if the Premier League allows them to carry on.
The Premier League must make it clear that it's a one-off and that it can never happen again.
The mismanagement at Fratton Park is frightening. Paying John Utaka £80,000-a-week is simply irresponsible.
My solution would be for new owners of Premier League clubs to have to put down a £30m bond. It takes more than £30m to bankroll a club, but at least it would prove you had some money.
It's hard to believe that any of Portsmouth's recent owners would have been able to come up with the £30m bond.

Re: Arsenal The Gunners
Arsenal 2-0 Sunderland: Bendtner and Fabregas keep up pressure on United
Published 17:14 20/02/10 By MirrorFootball
Theo Walcott may not yet have secured his seat on England's World Cup plane to South Africa.
But he could hardly have turned in a better audition than the performance he produced in front of England manager Fabio Capello at the Emirates stadium today.
Nicklas Bendtner scored the first-half goal and Cesc Fabregas the injury-time penalty which defeated a sterile Sunderland side but it was Walcott who produced the pace and the menace.
At times it had shades of Zagreb 2008, the night Walcott scored a hat-trick against Croatia which set England on the right course in their World Cup qualifying campaign.
There were no goals this time but if you want a winger to terrorise defenders, then Walcott in this mood does it better than most.
But if Walcott was Arsenal's most lethal attacker, the other man who made the difference was Manuel Almunia.
Arsene Wenger had been anxious to stress his support for Lukasz Fabianski after the young Polish goalkeeper's two howlers had sunk the Gunners in their Champions League defeat against Porto in midweek, but it did not stretch to keeping him in the side.
He went for the experience of 34-year-old Almunia, who was back after passing a fitness test on an injured finger. Sol Campbell, whose backpass also contributed to the Gunners' downfall, started on the bench.
But if the disappointment of Portugal lingered then it did not show. Arsenal were quicker to the ball, Fabregas and Aaron Ramsey seizing control in midfield with their slide-rule passing and pretty patterns.
Walcott announced his desire as early as the fourth minute, sprinting past Sunderland full-back George McCartney like an Olympic finalist - which is not that far-fetched, considering he has been timed at a hand-held 10.2 seconds for 100m.
McCartney must have wondered then if it had been a good idea to get out of bed this particular Saturday.
The answer came time and again over the next hour or so as Walcott tempted him in and then left him in his wake in a straight foot race.
Quite how Sunderland went in only one goal down in that first-half is one of life's little mysteries.
McCartney was part of the reason, deflecting one Samir Nasri shot over the crossbar and then somehow diverting a Bendtner left-foot blast on to the bar only to see it bounce to safety.
The opening goal, however, came courtesy of a slaloming run from Emmanuel Eboue which would not have been out of place on the slopes in Vancouver.
At the end of it he found a precision pass across the box which found Bendtner loitering in cavernous space at the far post. Bendtner may have scored easier goals but it is doubtful.
True, Fraizer Campbell did bring one fine save from Almunia - and how Kenwyne Jones did not score when clean through with only Almunia to beat, only he knows. But for the most part Steve Bruce's side were out-thought, out-manoeuvred and out-played.
They were also somewhat fortunate to finish with a full complement after Sunderland captain Lorik Cana launched a two-footed tackle which felled Eboue. Referee Steve Bennett produced a yellow card, which could easily have been red.
The second half was more of the same, Arsenal flooding forward, full of spark. Walcott brought a fine save from Gordon, Thomas Vermaelen almost decapitated the Sunderland goalkeeper with a free-kick pile-driver and chances were made and squandered in equal measure.
Arsenal almost paid the price - and would have done if it was not for the quick thinking of Almunia, who raced out to smother a Darren Bent shot when the striker was clean through.
There were a few nervy moments for the Gunners as they failed to cash in on their superior possession.
But in injury time Fabregas was brought down by Campbell on the edge of the area and the Spaniard, forever Arsenal's orchestrator, got up to rap home Arsenal's second from the spot.
It was no more than Wenger's men deserved.

Striker Nicklas Bendtner scored a first-half tap-in and Cesc Fabregas an injury-time penalty as Arsenal got back to winning ways with a 2-0 triumph in the Premier League.
After the disappointment of their Champions League first leg defeat against Porto in midweek, Arsenal produced a vibrant performance as goals in each half secured the win.
Sunderland were not without opportunities, however, Kenwyne Jones in particular guilty of some poor finishing.

Re: Arsenal The Gunners
Arsene must loosen the purse strings if Arsenal are to compete again, plus why Terry simply had to go
By Mark Lawrenson
Published 23:01 05/02/10
Arsenal should not be written off as title contenders - even if they lose at Chelsea.
Arsene Wenger’s men had a thoroughly bad day against Manchester United but are still just THREE players away from being a truly outstanding team.
They need a top class keeper. Another centre back to ease the pressure on William Gallas and Thomas Vermaelen. Plus another centre forward.
That would give Arsenal options, strength in depth and the ability to challenge for the title right until the end.
Wenger must give up on Manuel Almunia and address that issue at the end of the season. Plus a big centre forward gives them another option of using a centre forward.
Arsenal are not far away but, frustratingly, Wenger kept his hand in his pocket in January. It’s time to bite the bullet, spend some money and make Arsenal the real deal.
**
John Terry let himself down, Fabio Capello down and his country down.
Terry should have fallen on his sword immediately and said: “I’ve made a mistake, I’ll stand aside as captain and do my best to help England next summer.”
But it has become a saga, an ugly one at that.
It’s not such an issue of Terry and abuse from the fans. If anything, football will be something of a release.
But every time there is a squad, Terry will face embarrassing questions. It will be even harder if Wayne Bridge is in the squad, too. In fact, nigh on impossible.
There are few saints in the England squad. But personally, I would go for Rio Ferdinand as captain.

Re: Arsenal The Gunners
Why Theo Walcott must start for England in South Africa
By Mark Lawrenson
Published 23:03 12/02/10
Theo Walcott still has to be Fabio Capello’s first choice right winger for this summer’s World Cup finals.
That is not to say that Walcott doesn’t have a lot of work to do to get himself back into the England reckoning.
But when Capello looks down the list at players for the right wing slot then Walcott at his best gets the nod ahead of the other contenders.
David Beckham is stitched on in Capello’s mind because of his experience, quality and presence in the dressing room and on the pitch, even if he’s slightly more of a bit-part player for England.
This weekend will give one or two of the contenders a chance to shine in the FA Cup fifth round. But Walcott is still the only player out of the other young pretenders who has delivered on the really big stage for England.
That hat trick in Croatia during the qualifying campaign may have raised expectations on Walcott’s shoulders.
But it also proved that he can do it for England when he’s in the spotlight and on the big occasion.
Aaron Lennon has got bags of potential, has been having a great season for Tottenham and they have really missed him in recent weeks.
Shaun Wright-Phillips has done OK for Manchester City while Ashley Young’s form has dipped alarmingly for Aston Villa this season.
But Walcott will have the edge if only he can get back to playing regularly and to playing well for Arsenal because he’s done it for England when it matters while the others haven’t yet.
Lennon has come closest and the good thing about him now is that he is having a good season, is working on his game - in terms of passing, finishing and crossing - and also has competition for places at Tottenham.
Harry Redknapp has assembled a good squad and David Bentley’s re-emergence together with Niko Kranjcar means that Lennon has to be at the top of his game to play for Tottenham.
Lennon has looked good in patches and his recent performances for England give him a good chance. He's got pace, runs at players and enjoyed a strong finish to the qualifying campaign.
Wright-Phillips has undoubted talent but has never really nailed his England place because he’s a bit inconsistent and his crossing sometimes lets him down.
For me, Young has had a disappointing season. You can bet that opposing managers up and down the country have drilled it into their defences as to how to play Young and, as a result, the Aston Villa winger has been found out a bit.
These days, managers leave no stone unturned in their preparation. How opponents line-up, which way to show the wingers, inside or out, and that’s what’s happened with Young.
He’s a good player. He’s at the right club with the right manager in Martin O’Neill to work at his game, improve and become a better player. Just like Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs, he can come through this spell in his career.
But Walcott still has an opportunity - despite everything this season. He’s suffered with injuries and a lack of form, possibly even belief. He looks like a player who always has to be completely fit to play.
That’s meant he’s missed a lot of games, he’s struggled to overcome a few differences of opinion between club and country last summer and played for the senior England team as well as the under-21s when he needed a holiday.
When he’s come back in, Walcott has got himself injured. Then he played at Chelsea last weekend and struggled. But who wouldn’t against Ashley Cole? He’s the best left back in the world and his injury is devastating for England.
But with a run of games and a bit form then there can be no doubt that Walcott can re-establish himself for England and he can certainly give Arsenal a turbo boost for the rest of the campaign.
Walcott not only has a pace, an ability to hurt opposing defenders but he also has another big advantage over his rivals.
Walcott can, if required, play through the middle. Capello could name him as one of five strikers and still allow himself Beckham and one other for the right. That’s a huge bonus for Walcott and England.
Don’t be too hasty in writing off Walcott. Walcott has raw pace, Theo at the top of his game is better than Lennon, Young and Wright-Phillips and he’s shown he can handle the pressure cooker situations.
Yes, he’s got plenty to do for the rest of the season. But big talents like him don’t disappear. There’s a lot in front of him and there’s time enough for the World Cup.

Along with midfield compatriots Xavi and Andres Iniesta, Fabregas emerged from the Barcelona cantera but it is under the guidance of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal that he has become one of world football's most sought-after players, and a key figure for both club and country. He became the youngest player to represent the country at a World Cup when appearing in the 2006 tournament, but faces a strong challenge to secure a starting role under Vicente del Bosque though, having often featured as a substitute in the qualifying campaign.
Unlike the aforementioned Xavi and Iniesta, Fabregas left hometown club Barcelona at the age of just 16 when joining Arsenal in 2003 and it was a gamble that quickly paid off. After the club had gone unbeaten in 2003-04, Wenger could ignore the talent of Fabregas no longer and his stunning emergence the following season even convinced his manager to sell captain Patrick Vieira, such was his faith in the Spaniard who took the famous number four shirt.
An FA Cup final victory in 2005 aside, Fabregas may have been starved of silverware in North London but he is already regarded as one of the club's modern-day greats and has accumulated well over 200 appearances. The 2007-08 Young Player of the Year, Fabregas was installed as Arsenal captain in November last year and has thrived in Arsenal's free-flowing formation as its creative lynchpin.
Strengths: A quite superb passer of the ball who possesses both excellent vision and the ability to dictate the pace and tempo of a contest. Has a strong character and mentality to complement his technical excellence.
Weaknesses: Fabregas is largely impeccable for his club but a lack of real pace is noticeable. He is also less potent in front of goal than would be expected given his brilliant use of a football.
Career high: Being handed a starting role in the Euro 2008 final as Spain secured their first international trophy for 44 years by beating Germany 1-0.
Career low: A shock 2-0 defeat to the USA in the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup in June 2009 and, for Arsenal, defeat to Barcelona in the final of the 2006 Champions League.
Style: Composed, cultured, creative, a wonderful passer.
Quotes: "His vision is comparable to [Michel] Platini, and that is a compliment. He is at the start of his career and we know that Platini has finished his. Cesc has it all in front of him, but he has a vision and he will develop still more." Arsene Wenger, September 2007.
Trivia: Fabregas became Arsenal's youngest ever player in any competition on October 28, 2003 when appearing in a League Cup tie against Rotherham aged just 16 years and 177 days.
Soccernet says: He may prove to be one of the most talented substitutes at the World Cup finals, but if handed the chance expect Fabregas to showcase his quality on the biggest stage of all.

Cesc Fábregas Bio Send To Friend

Re: Arsenal The Gunners
Champions League review - Tues 9th March
Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner scored a hat-trick as the Gunners beat Porto 5-0 at Emirates.
The comprehensive victory gave Arsene Wenger's men a 6-2 aggregate successat the Emirates Stadium to secure a place in the last eight of the Champions League.
It meant the hosts made history by coming back after a opening-leg deficit in a European tie for the first time since 1978.
Bendtner opened the scoring in the 10th minute
. The move was started with a long ball from Manuel Almunia that Andrey Arshavin managed to win in the air, directing it towards Samir Nasri, despite Rolando towering over him.
IMPROBABLE SITUATION
Nasri put the ball in the area Rolando had left open, with Arshavin racing through on goal. The Russian and Porto defender Fucile crashed into goalkeeper Helton and the ball broke for Bendtner to tap home.
It was the Denmark striker's sixth of the season and meant if the scores remained level, Campbell's header at Estadio do Dragao would count double.
However, it is not in the nature of Wenger's side to defend a lead, with Diaby trying his luck from long range after a corner had been cleared but going just over.
Bendtner's second, in the 25th minute, again came after Arshavin's industry from an improbable situation.
He collected a poor clearance from Fucile but still had plenty of work to do but managed to wriggled back past the Porto full-back as well as Nuno Coelho and Ruben Micael before rifling his cross for Bendtner to tap home.
Arshavin should have added another in the 34th minute when Nasri got to the byline and pulled the ball back through Rolando's legs, but his team-mate smashed over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.
Nasri added the third when Arsenal counter-attacked. Nothing looked on when he picked the ball up on the right flank but he beat Meireles, Alvaro Pereira and Rodriguez before smashing past Helton from a tight angle.
It was 4-0 on the night when Arshavin broke from a corner, muscling past Fucile then threading the ball behind Meireles, allowing Emmanuel Eboue to round Helton and finish into an empty net.
Bendtner completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot in the final minute to round off a comprehensive victory.

A Nicklas Bendtner hat-trick propelled a dominant Arsenal FC side into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League as they overwhelmed FC Porto in north London.
Trailing 2-1 from the first leg in Portugal, history was against Arsène Wenger's team, who had overturned a deficit at home only once before in UEFA competition – and that in 1978/79. Bendtner's tenth-minute goal helped settle any nerves, however, and added a second from close range 15 minutes later, Andrey Arshavin playing a key role in both goals. Samir Nasri's brilliant solo strike in the 63rd minute and a cool finish on the break from substitute Emmanuel Eboué put the result beyond doubt, Bendtner completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot with the final kick of the match.
Arsenal were on the attack from the outset and were quickly rewarded. Nasri's inviting pass sent Arshavin scampering through and, though he was denied by Fucile's tackle with Porto goalkeeper Helton also in close attendance, the ball ran free for Bendtner to pop up among three defenders and prod into an empty net. Arshavin, who had earlier had a header saved by Helton, then continued an inspired display by conjuring up Arsenal's second.
Once more Fucile was inadvertently involved, his weak clearance going straight to the feet of Arsenal's Russian playmaker, who promptly dribbled past two defenders before squaring to give Bendtner the simplest of tap-ins. Porto remained a threat, notably with Hulk's incursions from the right and Falcao's presence in the centre, but the momentum was with the home side, who could easily have had a third when Nasri got behind the Porto defence and found Arshavin who could only balloon over the bar.
Bendtner and Abou Diaby forced sharp save from Helton as Arsenal looked to end the contest before the interval. Porto may have been glad to hear the half-time whistle, but they re-emerged in more determined fashion, with Cristián Rodríguez replacing Nuno Coelho in the middle. The substitute wasted little time getting involved, his low cross setting up Falcao for a shot which Manuel Almunia only gathered at the second attempt.
Beaten on all bar two of their 15 visits to England, Porto were nevertheless threatening a comeback and it needed Nasri's goalline clearance to keep out Rodríguez's glancing header from a corner. Instead, Arsenal settled the game and the tie with two quick goals. Few this season will match Nasri's 63rd-minute strike, the midfielder twisting and turning past three Porto players before slamming a shot in off the far post from a tight angle. Three minutes later, Arshavin completed a hat-trick of assists, galloping away on the break and feeding Eboué, who rounded Helton before steering in.
The goals ended any lingering Porto hopes but the Gunners continued to pour forward, Bendtner narrowly missing out on a hat-trick when he met Bacary Sagna's cross with a powerful header that flew just wide. The Dane made no mistake a minute into added time, however, slotting in his spot-kick after Eboué had been brought down to complete Arsenal's night and equal Porto's record margin of defeat in Europe.
