Re: Arsenal The Gunners
HULL 1-2 ARSENAL
Campbell: Gunners got their just deserts at Hull
March 13, 2010
Sol Campbell believed Arsenal's hard-fought win over Hull was deserved as they boosted their Premier League title credentials.
Arsene Wenger: 'The players are jaded'
Nicklas Bendtner struck in the third minute of added time to finally see off the 10-man Tigers at the KC Stadium.
And Campbell told ESPN: "I think we deserved it, we kept on probing, played some great football and created some great chances and it was all down to Nicklas knocking one in at the end. It was a tight game, but the main thing is we got the win.''
Hull's goal came from a disputed Jimmy Bullard penalty after Campbell bundled overJan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who appeared to be offside at the time. Campbell argued: "I think he came from an offside position and the ball was behind his head so technically it was a coming together.''
Bendtner missed a string of chances against Burnley last week but bounced back with a Champions League hat-trick against Porto and added the crucial strike at the KC. He told ESPN: "It felt really good, so long in coming and at 1-1 it was really tense and we were trying to push on.
"All goals you score are important, especially today and I'm pleased for the team that we won the game.''
Manager Arsene Wenger added: "We started well, when we were 1-0 up we lost our focus and took it a bit too easy. When it was 1-1 I knew we had to battle because suddenly Hull's belief raised. We needed to fight until the last second and fortunately we got the late goal.''
The Tigers played much of the game with 10 men after George Boateng received a second booking for a crude challenge on Bacary Sagna. Wenger said: "Unfortunately he deserved it but you can understand these challenges. If teams are fighting not to go out of the Premier League you understand that commitment.''
Hull boss Phil Brown was reflective after seeing his side finish empty-handed. "It's not consolations you're after it's positives,'' he said. "There have been question marks about our fight, commitment and spirit at this football club but it was there for everybody to see.
"We were down to 10 men, we had lost our most experienced player which was disappointing, but the players showed spirit today. We've asked for it for nine more games and if we get it we'll be fine. Today was an outstanding performance from more or less every individual in the team.''
Asked if Boateng had let the team down with his dismissal, Brown added: "George didn't let us down. George has never let me down since he came to the club.''

HULL 1-2 ARSENAL
Wenger's Arsenal look like the real deal

There are annual events in football and reports of Real Madrid's interest in Arsene Wenger tend to be among them.

Arsene Wenger has again rejected speculation linking him with Real Madrid
Thankfully for Arsenal, his rebuttals also occur on a yearly basis. Eloquent in his opposition to sport's "financial doping", as he terms it, the Arsenal manager's own model is more organic.
It is why he derives greater satisfaction from his homegrown triumphs. Whether they are moral as well as footballing victories can be disputed, but success is not bought. Their manager will not join Madrid, but questions persist if his side are the real deal. Recent results suggest they are. Much-criticised as Wenger's approach is, Arsenal are very much in the title race after his much-mocked striker scored a winner of vast importance at the KC Stadium on Saturday.
Real Madrid spent some £165 million on forwards last summer. Wenger, predictably, spent nothing. That, and Robin van Persie's absence, has elevated Nicklas Bendtner in the pecking order. His manager's faith has looked misplaced on occasions, such as during his litany of misses against Burnley. On others, it is perfectly justified.
A Champions League hat-trick against Porto was one evening to vindicate Wenger. This was another: when Boaz Myhill pushed a Denilson shot out, Bendtner reacted first, slotting the ball beyond the Hull goalkeeper.
It came in the 93rd minute and, while late goals can suggest an element of fortune, Arsenal score them with such frequency that they cannot be coincidence. "We always leave it late," Wenger said. "Maybe it is not good for my heart. After 90 minutes, it was 1-1 at Stoke and, after 90 minutes, it was 1-1 at Hull." Both matches were duly won.
It is evidence of a sense of purpose and unity. Team spirit cannot be imported in lucrative deals. It is generated. Arsenal possess it and, together with youthful exuberance, it explains the glut of last-gasp goals that have propelled them back into contention.
"It tells you we have desire and mental strength and we never give up," Wenger added. "For a young team, that is great. There is a team spirit there that is special."
Truth be told, the performance wasn't. Hull manager Phil Brown said: "For the first 20 minutes, I was astounded at the football they produced." Thereafter, however, the result was more significant than the performance. Arsenal spent the second half on the offensive and fashioned a series of chances, but Myhill was rarely tested until added time. While Theo Walcott provided an injection of pace, the craft of Cesc Fabregas was missed.
Andrei Arshavin flitted in and out of the game, but provided a fine opening goal. Samir Nasri had begun the move, picking out Bendtner, who weaved his way towards the penalty box before finding the Russian. He eluded George Boateng and Bernard Mendy before beating Myhill.
Hull responded. Jimmy Bullard levelled emphatically from the penalty spot after Sol Campbell had barged into Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Cue controversy, at least for Hull.
"The pivotal moment was undoubtedly in favour of Arsenal," Brown said. "I admire Sol Campbell. I spoke to him in the summer. He is a big colossus of a lad, but he should have been red-carded. It was offside, but it wasn't offside because the flag didn't go up. The letter of the law was quite simple." Yet his own admission that the Dutchman was offside when Dean Marney flicked the ball into his path weakened his case.
Instead, the man dismissed was Boateng. Already booked, his challenge on Bacary Sagna could have merited a red card in itself. A second yellow was the punishment. "I have no qualms with George Boateng's red card," Brown added.
Deprived of their most experienced campaigner, his side acquitted themselves well. "With ten men, we have harried and chased one of the best footballing teams in the world," Brown said.
It almost brought a point at the end of another surreal week at the KC Stadium. Monday's altercation between Bullard and Nick Barmby drew attention to them and amused in its repercussions.
"I apologised to the Women's Institute during the week for the fighting spirit we showed unfortunately in public," Brown said. "I don't apologise for the fighting spirit we showed today."
MAN OF THE MATCH: Jimmy Bullard. Despite defeat, Bullard showed why he remains so important to Hull when fit. He provided plenty of industry and a touch of inspiration. His fitness could be the biggest factor in their fate.
HULL VERDICT: A spirited display should encourage, even if the result does not. Liam Cooper and Steven Mouyokolo, two inexperienced defenders, acquitted themselves well in the rearguard action in the second half while the talismanic midfielder Stephen Hunt should return soon. But after one victory in 15 Premier League games, Hull desperately require points.
ARSENAL VERDICT: The determination to secure the result was admirable, but it was a day when the squad seemed stretched. Campbell endured an awkward evening and, with William Gallas still on the sidelines, he has acquired an importance. At least Fabregas and Tomas Rosicky should return next week, while Alex Song has now completed his two-match ban.

Bendtner Nicks it for Gunners
Updated: March 13, 2010, 8:47 AM UKNicklas Bendtner struck in stoppage time as Arsenal kept pace with Chelsea at the top of the Premier League with victory at ten-man Hull.• Wenger believes Gunners can take title
• Campbell: Deserved victoryThe title-chasing Gunners went in front when Andrei Arshavin prodded in after 14 minutes but Jimmy Bullard levelled with a penalty after 28 minutes following a clumsy Sol Campbell challenge on Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.Arsenal struggled to break down Hull following the 45th-minute dismissal of George Boateng but Bendtner earned a fifth straight win by netting after Denilson's swerving shot was not dealt with by Boaz Myhill.Arsenal were far from their fluid best - illustrated in the 5-0 Champions League win over Porto in midweek - but Hull must be given credit for disrupting the visitors' rhythm and were ultimately unlucky to suffer a fourth straight loss. The Tigers remain in the relegation zone with nine games remaining.Bullard was retained in the starting XI and Nick Barmby dropped to the bench in one of six changes made by manager Phil Brown in the wake of the 5-1 humiliation at Everton. The City midfielders were this week involved in an altercation in front of members of the Women's Institute near the Humber Bridge. Captain Cesc Fabregas was still absent for the Gunners and his playmaking ability was missed.Jozy Altidore flashed a right-foot shot from 20 yards wide after turning Campbell early on before Vennegoor of Hesselink nearly got on the end of Bullard's chip forward. The burly City forward pairing were clearly drafted in to get physical with Campbell and Thomas Vermaelen from the start, but Arsenal's defensive duo stood firm and the visitors pounced on the break after 14 minutes.Having scored three in the 5-0 midweek win, it was no surprise to see Bendtner involved in the opener. The Dane found Arshavin with a pass across the edge of the box and the Russian stumbled through attempted tackles from Boateng and Bernard Mendy before prodding beyond Myhill.Hull equalised from the spot after Campbell was adjudged to have hauled down Vennegoor of Hesselink. Dean Marney's ball was flicked on by Craig Fagan to the Dutchman, who appeared to be in an offside position, but Campbell's attempted tackle led referee Andre Marriner to point to the spot. Bullard stepped up and converted into the top corner.Campbell was booked and City's Andy Dawson followed for a late tackle on Denilson.Boateng and Bendtner were yellow carded for an exchange in the aftermath of the foul in scenes reminiscent of a fracas which saw the teams fined following their last meeting in December.Gael Clichy forged forward down the left and went down in the area under a challenge of Boateng, but found himself booked retrospectively for a dive in a frantic final few moments of the first half. And Boateng was soon walking off prematurely after a high challenge on Sagna saw the Hull captain dismissed for a second yellow. The numerical disadvantage forced Brown into a reshuffle, with Altidore moving wide and Vennegoor of Hesselink going it alone up front. But in a scrappy opening to the second half, Kamil Zayatte was fouled by Campbell and had to go off moments later.Arsenal encountered stern resistance and Bullard attempted to relieve the pressure for ten-man Hull only to see his 25-yard drive go over.Arsene Wenger introduced Theo Walcott and the England international's pace had an immediate impact. He soared through on the right, cut back for Samir Nasri and Arshavin ballooned the ball over.Arshavin and Walcott combined to gift Bendtner an opportunity, but the striker's poor effort was blocked and looped out for a corner. Walcott then had a half chance from Arshavin's pull back but could not connect.Altidore was withdrawn for Kevin Kilbane late on and Hull put men behind the ball to frustrate Arsenal. There were six minutes stoppage time and the visitors threw men forward. Clichy had a shot from wide on the left, but Myhill was fully behind it.The Tigers stopper could only block a swerving effort from Denilson soon after, but Bendtner reacted first to break the hosts' resistance and earn the Gunners a valuable win.<li id="quotes">Wenger believes Gunners can take titleArsene Wenger believes Arsenal's last-gasp 2-1 victory at 10-man Hull could go a long way to delivering a first Barclays Premier League title since 2004."It's maybe not good for my heart, but for the championship it's not bad," he said. "We have eight games to go, we are in there - why should we not believe?"What I believe especially is that we will give absolutely everything to do it. You saw that in the game today. We were a bit jaded but we kept going. We needed the three points and we got it after the 90 minutes."Wenger had no complaints about the penalty, but did not feel Campbell's challenge was worthy of a red card as the last defender."Vennegoor of Hesselink played him in an intelligent way," he said. "Sol had no other option than to touch him but there was no intention - it was accidental - and he (Vennegoor of Hesselink) was offside at the start."Hull manager Phil Brown felt Campbell - a player he spoke to over a move to the KC Stadium last summer - should have been sent off."The pivotal moment was undoubtedly in favour of Arsenal," Brown said. "Yes, he'll get judged on the way the ball came off him and George Boateng will get judged on the fact he got a red card."But these players can hold their heads up high because of the determination and the pride in the performance they put in."I'm very proud of my players. Ten men have harried and chased one of the best footballing teams in the country, if not in Europe, if not in the world."Meanwhile, Brown faces an anxious wait to discover Kamil Zayatte's fate. Zayatte was on crutches following the match after being forced off early in the second half following a strong challenge by Campbell.</li>

A second-half brace from Didier Drogba helped earn Chelsea a 4-1 home victory against West Ham United to move the Blues back to the top of the Premier League.

A stunning volley from Hammers midfielder Scott Parker cancelled out Alex's opener at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea turned on the style after the break to take all three points and move one point clear of Manchester United.
Drogba rose unmarked to restore Chelsea's lead in the 55th minute and Florent Malouda added a third 14 minutes from time before the Ivory Coast striker added his second in the final minute of the match.
However, Arsenal are joint top of the table, having played a game more, following a dramatic2-1 win at Hull City.
The Gunners took the lead when Andrei Arshavin escaped two markers and produced a lovely finish, but Hull responded when Jimmy Bullard scored a penalty. Sol Campbell was only shown a yellow card when fouling Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who appeared offside in the build-up.
The Tigers lost George Boateng to a red card before half-time when the midfielder was shown a second yellow for a high challenge on Bacary Sagna. Hull battled strongly with ten men butNicklas Bendtner struck three minutes into injury time when Boaz Myhill failed to grasp a shot from Denilson.
Two-goal hero Roman Pavlyuchenko's gave Tottenham Hotspur a 3-1 home win againstBlackburn Rovers to maintain the London club's hopes of a top-four finish in the Premier League.
The Russian striker, who has now scored eight goals in six games since being recalled to the Spurs line up, added to Jermain Defoe's 45th minute opener before Chris Samba pulled one back for Rovers. Pavlyuchenko made sure all three points went to Tottenham with an 85th minute a tap-in.
Aston Villa missed the chance to reduce their deficit in the race for the final Champions League place after being held to a goalless draw at Stoke City.
The closest the visitors came to making a breakthrough at the Britannia Stadium was three minutes after half-time when Stewart Downing's shot inadvertently deflected off team-mate John Carew but hit the side-netting with Thomas Sorensen wrong-footed.
Craig Gardner scored his first Birmingham City goal as Alex McLeish's side recovered to earn a point with a 2-2 draw against Everton and preserve their six month unbeaten home record.
Everton, knocked out of the FA Cup by Blues at Goodison Park this season, had taken control with two goals in three minutes midway through the first half from Victor Anichebe and Ayegbeni Yakubu.
But Cameron Jerome's third goal in the last two games gave City a lifeline before Gardner's moment of glory following his £3 million January move from local rivals Aston Villa.
Wolverhampton Wanderers took the spoils in their relegation six-pointer against Burnley, hanging on for a 2-1 win at Turf Moor.
Matt Jarvis took advantage of a short Tyrone Mears back pass to put the visitors ahead in the 26th minute and a Clarke Carlisle own goal almost saw them home. But a 73rd-minute header from substitute Steven Thompson gave the home side hope with Wolves forced into desperate defending to preserve their points.
Owen Coyle saw his Bolton Wanderers side gain their third win in four league games and edge closer to safety with a morale-boosting 4-0 win over relegation rivals Wigan Athletic.
Johan Elmander made the breakthrough at the Reebok Stadium in the 10th minute but it was only in the second half they took full control. Kevin Davies extended their lead from the penalty spot before Fabrice Muamba scored his first goal for the club with substitute Matt Taylor also on target.

Arsenal.com named Sports Website of the Year
Arsenal.com has been named Best Sports Website at the 2009 UK Website of the Year awards.
The Gunners' official club website received the highest average rating for content, design and navigation in the sports category. More than 850,000 votes were cast as UK web users selected their favourite websites in 22 categories.
"Voters are asked to judge a website on its content, navigation and design and they can award up to five stars for each of these categories," explained Teun Roks, Project Manager for Website of the Year. "They are also asked if they would recommend a website to friends and family. These four factors are all taken into consideration.
"Judging by the votes cast, the navigation of Arsenal.com is seen as its strongest point. The website is very easy to navigate around and that means that casual visitors to the website, as well as diehard fans, can easily find what they are looking for.
"If you look other sports websites you can see that a lot of them lack easy navigation. Football and other sports clubs have a lot of information to offer and therefore have trouble setting up a clear site structure which is easy to navigate around. Arsenal.com has obviously succeeded in this."
Website of the Year is a pan-European initiative by online research agency MetrixLab, Europe's largest online market research agency.

Re: Arsenal The Gunners
Wenger - We are the kings of scoring late
- 5/2 AFC win the PremiershipFree £20 Paddy Power bet
- 15/2 Arsenal win Champs LgeBet £10 get £20 Free
By Richard Clarke
Leaving it late is the mark of champions, according to Arsène Wenger.
Arsenal secured a crucial 2-1 victory in injury time at Hull on Saturday. A fortnight earlier they had done the same thing at Stoke and, in fact, in their last five games Wenger’s men have scored six goals in the 90th minute or later.
The manager puts this tardiness down to technique and belief. He has admitted he could do without the adrenaline shot but his side's ability to fathom out a win in tight circumstances has a title-winning quality to it.
“Manchester United used to score late, yes,” he said. “I believe that this season nobody has scored more than Arsenal in the last 15 minutes. Maybe it is down to a technical superiority and a never-give-up attitude. That is what I like in my team. When I see them on the pitch, I know they will not give up.”
They had that same attitude when at the end of November they trailed leaders Chelsea by 11 points. Right now they are just two points adrift of Manchester United, who top the table.
“I knew that they would not give up then but at some stage we needed results to start going for us,” he said. “You could not predict that, frankly.
“Our attitude has been spot on and we have deserved the wins. The rest of the season will be tight, interesting and exciting and that is all you need when you work in newspapers.
“I don't know if this would be my best achievement, let's achieve something first!
“But with eight games - four at home, four away - to go we are still in the race. So let’s have a go.”

Scoring late is often seen as a hallmark of champions.
Nicklas Bendtner's 93rd-minute winner at Hull on Saturday was the 19th goal Arsenal have scored in the closing stages of games this Premier League season.
No other team has been so successful at hitting the back of the net after the 75th minute this term.
Our table below outlines the number of late goals scored by the 'Big Four' clubs over the last three campaigns.
Arsenal have already surpassed last term's tally of 17 but are still eight goals short of the 27 strikes amassed by the Gunners during the 2007/08 season.

Re: Arsenal The Gunners
Parlour - Theo can be 'massive' for Arsenal
- 5/2 AFC win the PremiershipFree £20 Paddy Power bet
- 15/2 Arsenal win Champs LgeBet £10 get £20 Free
By Nick Teale
Theo Walcott can become a major player for Arsenal and shouldn’t be judged on his injury-hit season, according to Ray Parlour.
The former Arsenal midfielder even drew similarities between the England international, 21 today, and David Beckham during the peak of his career.
Walcott has recently re-found his form after receiving criticism for some of his performances while returning from a string of injuries during the first six months of his season.
Speaking at 'An Audience with Ray Parlour' to be shown soon on TV Online, the Double-winner defended Walcott's form in this campaign and asserted his belief that the striker will play a large part in Arsenal's future.
"Players like Theo Walcott have massive potential," he commented. "I would not say he has had a bad season it is just that he has not had a run in the team.
"Against Burnley, he was brilliant, absolutely fantastic. But if you are going to be a big player you need to do that week in week out at a consistent level.
"Theo will do that once he gets his injuries sorted out. Once he does that he can be a massive player for Arsenal.
"The ball he put over at the start of the second half at Hull was like Beckham in his prime. But Theo has got pace as well. He has just got to get injury free now and get a run in the team."

MATCHDAY 8, WEEK 1
Even the magic of Rooney, Robben and Ronaldo could not prevent Samir Nasri from winning our latest Play of the Day poll.
And the winner is
Samir Nasri (Arsenal - Porto)
Nasri twisted and turned past three Porto players before driving a shot in off the far post from a very tight angle. A remarkable effort that summed up the home side's domination on the night.

What we think
His Arsenal FC team mate Denilson called the strike the most amazing goal in the competition this season and UEFA.com users might well agree as Samir Nasri’s sublime solo strike is our latest Play of the Day poll winner. The French international midfield player illustrated that he can be equally menacing in a central role as out wide with his overall display and his goal showed that he is a threat from anywhere. He picked the ball up to the right of the penalty area and showed purpose and poise in slaloming past three FC Porto defenders before crashing home a precise shot from the tightest of angles. What fans are saying about this video

Arsenal face Barcelona in Champions League
Arsenal will play Barcelona in the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League.
Arsène Wenger's team were paired with the European champions when the draw for the last eight of this season's competition took place at Uefa Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday.

The first leg of this season's Quarter-Final will take place at Emirates Stadium with the return leg at the Nou Camp.
If Arsenal advance to the last four of the Champions League they will face Inter Milan or CSKA Moscow.
Arsenal.com will have reaction from the draw later today. Stay close to the official club website for ticket information.

Barcelona berdepan laluan sukar pertahan kejuaraan
2010/03/20
– AP
