Despite the disappointment of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final exit, the Arsenal FC players were gushing in their praise of FC Barcelona's four-goal hero Lionel Messi. "When you have someone like him in your team there's a good chance you will win," said right-back Bacary Sagna.
Blown away by Barcelona's slick passing football in the early stages of the 2-2 first-leg draw in London, the Gunners made a more accomplished start at the Camp Nou, even taking the lead through Nicklas Bendtner on 18 minutes. Yet the Dane's strike merely sparked Messi's virtuoso performance, the No10 rattling in a stunning 22-minute hat-trick to leave the hosts in control at the interval. Although the visitors applied sustained pressure in the second half they failed to capitalise, allowing the champions to assert their authority further with a fourth Messi goal in the closing moments.
If Sagna felt the 4-1 scoreline was "very harsh" on Arsène Wenger's charges, he accepted nonetheless that the better side had progressed to a semi-final against FC Internazionale Milano. "Over the two games they definitely deserved to go through," the French international told UEFA.com. "But we played well tonight and posed them a lot of problems. Even when we needed two goals, we still felt we had a chance. We've shown a lot of mental strength recently, scoring late goals, but when Messi got the fourth we knew the game was up."
Where Messi had been relatively quiet by his standards in the first encounter, the 22-year-old was simply unstoppable in the return. Sagna said: "In my opinion, he's proved again he's the best in the world. He's capable of doing everything. He keeps the ball, he dribbles, he scores. It's very hard to stop him because he has a low centre of gravity and when he turns he is impossible to catch. We left him too much space in the first leg and again tonight, and he punished us." Centre-forward Bendtner was equally generous, saying: "Messi scored four fantastic goals. He's a phenomenal player and a big part of a great team. He's the best in the world."
Theo Walcott, meanwhile, was looking forward to "sitting back and watching the best player in the world" in the coming days, although he suggested it would take him some time to digest the defeat and turn on his DVD player. "It's disappointing because we made a great start," said the winger, whose lightning break led to Bendtner's goal. "Those five minutes [after scoring] were crucial but we didn't manage to hold on. You can't afford to give Barcelona chances and unfortunately we gave them a couple. But it's been a great experience for us.Now we have to learn from this."

Almunia awestruck by Messi
Published: Tuesday 6 April 2010, 23.08CET
Arsenal FC goalkeeper Manuel Almunia hailed Lionel Messi as the "best player in the world" after the Argentinian international scored all of FC Barcelona's goals in a 4-1 win that secured the European champions' passage to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. "You have to try and anticipate but it's so difficult because he is very skilful and can do whatever he wants at any moment," Almunia said. "He's the best player in the world. We have a lot of time to recover, focus on the league and keep going and give everything we have in the next game."

BARCELONA 4-1 ARSENAL
Merida: Arsenal in awe of "best player ever"
By Tom Adams, Camp Nou
April 7, 2010
After watching Lionel Messi rip Arsenal to shreds with a scintilating performance at Camp Nou,Fran Merida told Soccernet the Barcelona forward has now joined, and possibly surpassed, the ranks of all-time greats.
Hats off to Lionel Messi.
• Barcelona 4-1 Arsenal
• Harry Harris: Messi is a phenomenon
• Champions League gallery
• Paper Round: Magic of Messi
• Forum: How much is Messi worth?
• Forum: How do you cope with loss?
Tuesday night's Champions League quarter-final was settled decisively by the little Argentinean genius as he scored four times, including a first-half hat-trick, in a quite brilliant individual display.
The quality of Messi's finishing left 90,000 Catalans in awe and watching from his position on the bench, Merida - a fellow disciple of Barca's La Masia academy before his move to Arsenal in 2006 - could only join in the praise for a player who constantly suspends belief with his performances at present.
"For me he is the best player ever," Merida told Soccernet. "I didn't get to see Maradona or Pele.
"When Messi is at his best he is the best player in the world. He showed that. I think you can stop him, but when he is at his best it is very difficult.
"I think Lionel Messi is a great player. We are disappointed because after the first goal I thought we could be a dangerous team here and could have got the win but they are just a great team and he is a great player as well."
Arsenal must now put the haunting image of Messi sauntering through a static defence to the back of their minds and focus on their league ambtions, with the Gunners three points behind leaders Chelsea and one behind Manchester United with five games to play.
It is a notorious cliche, but Merida believes Arsenal must approach each of their remaining Premier League games as if they were cup finals if the Gunners are to surge past their rivals and win a first piece of silverware since the 2005 FA Cup.
"We still have five games to go and they are very important," Merida said. "We have 'finals' left and we want to win every game until the end of the season and then hopefully Chelsea and Man U will drop points. We want to be champions.
"We do [have tough games against Tottenham and Manchester City], but also Blackburn away and Wigan away are going to be tough."

Wenger concedes Arsenal must spend

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that his side needs strengthening after they were beaten 4-1 by a Lionel Messi-inspired Barcelona at the Nou Camp.

Arsene Wenger has not won a trophy since 2005.

Wenger has been criticised for failing to invest heavily in the side during four trophyless seasons for the Gunners, but the French boss now concedes that something must change.
"We have to add something, for sure, but we have some time to think about that," he admitted. "We are at a stage where we're developing players.
"[Theo] Walcott is 22; [Nicklas] Bendtner is 22; [Samir] Nasri, [Abou] Diaby and Denilson are 22 or 23. They've shown some great qualities and they'll get stronger every year.
"We were very young and what we did was very positive. We had six or seven players under 23 in the team and we had plenty of opportunities. We showed we lacked maturity in the weight of the final ball."
Wenger, though, would not be drawn on immediate targets, preferring to look ahead to their Premier League clash with arch-rivals Tottenham next week.
"The priority now is to recover from the game," he said. "We have played quite well, with a lot of character as ever, but we made a few too many mistakes. The match forces you straight away to focus because you know it's going to be a derby.
"Yes, of course, you worry about the team's needing lifting. We have to recover quickly because we cannot drop any more points to have a chance to fight for the Premier League. That's why we have to recover and focus completely on the Premier League now."

Van Persie ready to return against Tottenham
By Soccernet staff
April 13, 2010
Arsenal striker Robin van Persie will return from injury in Wednesday night's north London derby with Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
Robin van Persie returns.
Van Persie has been on the sidelines since suffering ankle ligament damage following a challenge by Italy's Giorgio Chiellini in an international friendly last November, but will play some part against the Gunners' London rivals from the bench.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits he is taking a ''gamble'' in bringing the striker back ahead of schedule but insists Arsenal have missed Van Persie's goal power this season.
Wenger, who lost William Gallas for the season when he came back too soon in the Champions League first leg against Barcelona, said: ''There is always a gamble in this kind of decision. But in his (Van Persie's) case we have been a bit more cautious because he has had more time for preparation.
''The biggest gamble I took recently was with Gallas. It didn't work, but he came back from a muscular problem, that is not the case for Robin. It was a joint problem.
''When I pick a player it means he is fit and sharp and has worked very hard. Of course he lacks match-practice but physically he is ready, he is fit.''
Wenger believes Arsenal's title challenge would be several points better off but for Van Persie's injury.
''He is a very important player for this club,'' said Wenger. ''He is important for the confidence. He can make the final ball, he is good on set-pieces, he can score goals, so we are very happy to have him back. The sadness was that we lost him so early in the season.''
The Dutch striker returned to full training last week and although he was expected to make his first-team comeback against Manchester City at the end of the month he is now set to bolster the Gunners' forward line against their arch rivals.
The loss of Van Persie was a huge blow to Arsenal in their challenge for the Premier League title. He had netted seven goals in 11 Premier League starts before the ankle injury.
Arsenal have had to rely on the goals of Francesc Fabregas - he has bagged 15 in the league this term - to fill the void with Nicklas Bendtner only managing five goals over the league campaign. But with captain Fabregas now out for the rest of the season the return of Van Persie will be a timely boost.
Bendtner is delighted that Van Persie is back. "It will be great to have him back," Bendtner told the club's official website. "He had a nasty injury and he has been working really hard in training to get back and if we can have him available for the last games - obviously being out for that long takes a bit of time - but if we can have him available it is a boost for us."
Wenger also confirmed defender Sol Campbell would play from the start against his former club and at a ground where he is bound to receive a hostile reception. He also said he believes Campbell has been one of the keys to Arsenal's continued title surge.
''Sol has been a big support for me and the squad,'' he said. ''He is very important in the dressing room because he is highly focused and highly motivated. Every time he has played he has turned in a very good performance. It is one of the good signings I have made.
''I have no concerns about him. He will play tomorrow. I didn't imagine he would play as many games as he has. I thought he would play in one or two games maybe but he got those extra matches because he played well.''

Re: Arsenal The Gunners
COMING SOON TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE...
MILAN JOVANOVIC
(Standard Liege to Liverpool)
The pacy 28-year-old Serb can play as a striker or winger and Liverpool’s profile will suit his ego. Should be a colourful addition to the Barclays Premier League next season and won’t be short of an opinion.
JEROME BOATENG
(Hamburg to Man City)
Deal still to be finalised but the powerful German defender, brother of Portsmouth’s Kevin-Prince and
valued at around £11m, will be a key figure in City’s summer defensive overhaul.
JAN MUCHA
(Legia Warsaw to Everton)
Big Slovakian goalkeeper has been signed as cover for Tim Howard but could threaten for the No 1 position.
Has been likened to Petr Cech and the Toffees will hope he's as good.
LUIS SUAREZ
(Ajax to Chelsea)
The 23-year-old Uruguay forward has been monitored by Manchester United, City, Arsenal and Chelsea, but his agent Daniel Fonseca says the latter have first option of a deal in the summer.
Wenger thought then that Arsenal might make a bid in January but finances, Chamakh’s agent and no doubt Bordeaux’s progress in Europe as well as in France’s Ligue 1 meant the Moroccan stayed.
It's over: Marouane Chamakh is out of Europe
‘I took a risk by not prolonging my contract because I could get injured at any moment,’ said Chamakh. ‘It is the first time I will be a free agent.’
He is a young man of some determination. Last summer he initially refused to go on Bordeaux’s pre-season trip to Canada as fees and wages had been agreed ‘with three clubs in England’, said Chamakh. But Bordeaux were also determined. Under Laurent Blanc, they had won the title for the first time in 10 seasons and Chamakh was joint top scorer.
The club hoped they could persuade him to sign a new deal and will lose up to £15milion if he leaves on a free transfer.
Bordeaux will be dismayed because Chamakh has been revitalised under Blanc. As a teenager born in Aiguillon, 100 miles from Bordeaux, he joined the club’s academy at 15 and made the first team at 18.
Chamakh’s father El-Mustapha had played professionally in Morocco before
bringing his family to France — Marouane picked Morocco over France and has 50 caps. Big things were predicted and when Chamakh was 21, Lyon, the new power in France, tried to buy him. Bordeaux blocked that and Chamakh’s form dipped.
He scored five league goals in 2006-07, four the following season. But last season Chamakh was crucial to Bordeaux’s title win. In one game before Christmas, with Bordeaux second in the table, he came on at half-time at Monaco to score two headers and turn a 3-0 deficit into a 4-3 win.
Heading is his obvious strength, but Chamakh has others. He often plays up front on his own and is prepared to work and close down defenders.
Off the pitch Chamakh is different from your average footballer. He is interested in politics and put his name forward as a candidate for the centrist Democratic Movement last month.
With 16 of the 17 Premier League titles having been won by Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea — and another on the way — some democratic movement in England would be welcome.
