Hard work rewarded by Messi magic

If neutrals gasped at Lionel Messi's virtuoso display, Thierry Henry said it was FC Barcelona's hard work that laid the foundations for the "fiesta of football" that followed against VfB Stuttgart.

While neutral football lovers and FC Barcelona fans were stunned by the European champions' quality of play in their 4-0 demolition of VfB Stuttgart, it was typical that the Barcelona players wanted to focus on the intense hard work which underpinned their victory in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League first knockout round second leg.
If there was a keynote performance it came from the man who dominated last season's UEFA Champions League and scored the clinching goal in the final, Lionel Messi. With two goals, a hand in Barça's second and various mazy dribbles, the No10 enjoyed one of his great Camp Nou nights. But fellow striker Thierry Henry pointed out that attitude and rolled-up sleeves had made possible the fun that followed.
Henry told UEFA.com: "The game finished 4-0, but what we did really well was put Stuttgart under pressure from the start. When we work as hard as that, we can impose our football and make it hard for any rival to play. We know in Europe you simply cannot come out slowly and not start well.
"If you start well, you can go on to talk about the goals and the footballing fiesta, but the early work was the key. Hard work always pays off and we were hungry today. Now we have to do that every game. From the last eight in Europe onwards, every game is a final.
Former FC Internazionale Milano defender Maxwell compared the strength of Barcelona's display with that of his former club the night before against Chelsea FC. "Inter and Barça offer two different styles of football, but this week proved they can be equally effective," he told UEFA.com. "Inter notched a top victory in London but we did here, too."
Crucial though the basics may be, there was no escaping the fact Messi was mesmerising. Pedro Rodríguez, whose 22nd-minute goal had made the 3-1 aggregate lead an unbridgeable gap, added: "Even Messi has never before had so many games where he performed at such a high level. He scored two marvellous goals and against tough opponents. His first goal opened the game up for us and his second, our third, finished it off."
Everything went so well that even substitutes Zlatan Ibrahimović and Bojan Krkić combined for the fourth goal in a 5-1 aggregate success. All of which left Henry, with one eye on the quarter-final draw, to muse: "I don't know whether we just became the team to beat, but when we play with that attitude and mentality we are genuinely good. However, history tells you that football can do very strange things to you."

FC Barcelona 4-0 VfB Stuttgart (agg: 5-1)
Lionel Messi scored two and set up another as the holders progressed after inflicting a record-equalling European defeat on Stuttgart.
by Graham Hunter
from Camp Nou
Holders FC Barcelona cruised into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, equalling VfB Stuttgart's record defeat in Europe thanks to two goals from the sublime Lionel Messi.
Josep Guardiola will credit the 4-0 victory to one of his team's best overall display of the season even if Messi scored in each half and helped Pedro Rodríguez register Barça's second. Yet this was a masterclass from the world's best player. Before kick-off Stuttgart coach Christian Gross was asked how to stop Messi. "Don't let him have the ball" was the sensible reply – the German side found the task impossible.
Level at 1-1 after the first leg, Stuttgart had been giving a fine account of themselves before the roof caved in. The visitors were emboldened by their ease of stringing passes together but on 13 minutes were caught on the break when one went astray. Yaya Touré galloped forward, fed Messi and the No10 did the rest, taking Zdravko Kuzmanović for a walk, then slamming a shot between two defenders and high into Jens Lehmann's top-right corner. The Camp Nou roared; Guardiola sprinted to the touch line and gave instructions to Gerard Piqué. He wanted Andrés Iniesta and Sergio Busquets to switch touchlines, they did and the second goal arrived.
Six quick-fire passes involving the pair, plus Pedro and Messi, ended with the Argentinian international bending the ball into the path of Touré, whose pass was steered in by Pedro. This time the movement and the culmination were so thrilling that even Guardiola danced a little jig on the touch line. Just before the half-hour it could have been 3-0. Touré was relishing his unusual wide role and again broke free on the left, outstripping Stefano Celozzi and sliding a tantalising cross in front of Jens Lehmann – Thierry Henry failed to convert it by a matter of millimetres.
Messi would not be overshadowed for long, however. Stuttgart were more brusque after half-time, trying to suffocate the forward, but he soon found space. Dribbling brilliantly, he sucked in three defenders before squaring for Touré to drive narrowly wide. Messi was unstoppable. On the hour Daniel Alves flicked Pedro's pass to him and, from outside the box, he crashed in his fourth UEFA Champions League goal of the season.
His hat-trick nearly arrived courtesy of an Alves cross in the 66th minute but Messi's header, reminiscent of the one with which he sealed victory in the final against Manchester United FC last May, brought a fine save from Lehmann. The show rolled on as Zlatan Ibrahimović had a goal ruled out, the goalkeeper again had to save well, from Iniesta this time, and Messi ran half the pitch before clipping wide.
"Si, si, si, nos vamos a Madrid" the Camp Nou faithful roared – looking beyond Friday's draw for the last eight and to the final on 22 May. A great deal of work remains before that, but on this form few would doubt Barça achieving it. The holders underlined those credentials when substitutes Ibrahimović and Bojan Krkić combined for the fourth in the last minute, the Sweden striker releasing his team-mate for a right-footed finish.

Xavi Hernández has been ruled out of the second leg of FC Barcelona's first knockout round tie against VfB Stuttgart after suffering a calf tear, though Seydou Keita has been passed fit to play.

FC Barcelona will be without Xavi Hernández for Wednesday's UEFA Champions League first knockout round second leg against VfB Stuttgart after the midfielder suffered a right calf tear.
The 30-year-old sustained the injury in training on Tuesday and it is thought he will be out of action for a fortnight, potentially ruling him out of the first leg of any quarter-final should Barcelona qualify.
On a brighter note for the Blaugrana, Seydou Keita has been declared fit for selection, with the Mali midfielder fully recovered from the hamstring tear that kept him sidelined for a month.
With the tie balanced at 1-1, Barça will hope to overcome Stuttgart at Camp Nou and become Spain's sole representative in Friday's quarter-final draw after Sevilla FC were eliminated by PFC CSKA Moskva on Tuesday.

Barcelona told to go for goals
Published: Tuesday 16 March 2010, 19.45CET
Pep Guardiola will send his FC Barcelona side out to attack even though a goalless draw at home to VfB Stuttgart would book a UEFA Champions League quarter-final place.
FC Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola says his side will not curb their attacking instincts even though a goalless draw in the second leg of their tie with VfB Stuttgart would send the holders into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. Stuttgart led at home through Cacau before Zlatan Ibrahimović levelled the tie and Christian Gross will keep faith with the side that held Barcelona three weeks ago.
Josep Guardiola, Barcelona coach
If we play to defend, we will be sent packing. Last season in the last 16 against Lyon we said the same thing; we are going to attack, have possession and create as many chances as possible because if we don't do that, we won't continue in the Champions League and will only have the league left. There's no other option. This match is a final and will set up the rest of the season for us.
Of course we can lose as Madrid did, without a doubt. It's a huge challenge to make it to the quarter-finals, [to be] among Europe's best, to equal Manchester United in reaching the quarter-finals for the third successive time. The team deserves the stadium to be absolutely full, I want the fans to back the team because we're much stronger with them behind us.
Christian Gross, Stuttgart coach
We have to play intelligently. We know Barcelona are an attacking team who always want to score. We have to be more disciplined than in the first leg, hold on to possession – that will be vital – and trust ourselves.
I plan to field the same team as in the first leg and I'm still thinking about a few things, like where to play [Aleksandr] Hleb. The strikers are doing a great job, we've played well recently and the team has a good leader on the pitch in Jens [Lehmann] so that's why I'm convinced we will play a great match. I will try to find the right formula: we have analysed Barcelona and our own game. Some of my players know the stadium and others don't, so we will use their experience. I don't think we have to be fearful and see what happens.

Ibrahimović pegs back spirited Stuttgart

VfB Stuttgart 1-1 FC Barcelona
Cacau gave Stuttgart a deserved half-time lead but Zlatan Ibrahimović replied in the 52nd minute for the holders.
VfB Stuttgart gave holders FC Barcelona a real test but were denied a lead to take to the Camp Nou for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League first knockout round tie.
Stuttgart were rewarded for a sound tactical start midway through the first half when the in-form Cacau headed them in front against the team coach Christian Gross warned were "the best club side in the world". However, Zlatan Ibrahimović made the most of one of his few chances soon after the restart, getting the away goal which makes Stuttgart's trip to Spain on 17 March all the more daunting.
With Barcelona imposing their well-rehearsed possession game early on, Stuttgart responded in an understandably cautious manner, sitting deep in their own half and looking to hit the reigning champions on the counterattack. It almost paid dividends when Lionel Messi slipped in the Stuttgart box just five minutes in, allowing the home side to break quickly, only for Timo Gebhart to direct the game's first shot on target within easy reach of Victor Valdés.
Growing in confidence as the Blaugrana struggled to create in attack and with the bumper home crowd behind them, Stuttgart began to venture forward with left-back Cristian Molinaro enjoying plenty of crossing opportunities. However, it was from the opposing flank that the game's opening goal came on 25 minutes, Gebhart swinging a perfect cross to the far post, where Cacau arrived on cue to send a measured header into the far corner.
Oozing confidence after his four-goal display against 1. FC Köln on Saturday, the Germany striker continued to threaten as Stuttgart entered their best phase of the match. Twice the energetic forward broke into the box in the immediate aftermath of the goal only to be denied in the first instance by his own unselfishness and by the feet of Valdés shortly afterwards.
While Messi had Lehmann thanking the left-hand upright when his effort from distance squirmed under the 40-year-old custodian's grasp, it was Stuttgart who looked the more dangerous as the half-time whistle approached, Christian Träsch and Pavel Pogrebnyak both spurning decent opportunities to extend their lead.
Those missed chances were punished early in the second half when Ibrahimović equalised. The Swedish international's initial attempt after Gerard Piqué headed back a Sergio Busquets cross was blocked superbly by Lehmann, but the experienced goalkeeper was powerless to stop the towering striker from stroking in the rebound. While Messi sent another dangerous ball across the face of goal soon after, Stuttgart continued positively, almost restoring their lead when Sami Khedira fired wide after being teed up by Cacau.
The lively Molinaro persisted well into the closing stages on the left flank and was almost rewarded after showing good pace to get to the byline, though the Italian defender's cross was just too much of a stretch for Cacau in the centre. Therefore, while Stuttgart have a daunting task in three weeks' time, Gross's charges have every reason to be proud of their performance as they continue their excellent form under the Swiss coach.

Guardiola demands better from Barça
Published: Tuesday 23 February 2010, 23.14CET
Josep Guardiola was not surprised FC Barcelona had been stretched at VfB Stuttgart as the UEFA Champions League holders battled to a 1-1 last 16 first-leg draw in Germany. "Europe is very tough, very difficult and demanding," said the Barça coach. "We have to do better, play the way we are capable of, but don't forget that in European competition you are facing very good teams."

Re: TO ALL BARCELONA FANZ !!!!!!!!!!
'It's fair to compare him to Maradona'
Published: Wednesday 17 March 2010
One name stood out after FC Barcelona's win over VfB Stuttgart as Christian Gross likened that man Lionel Messi to Diego Maradona and Josep Guardiola called him "simply the best".
Josep Guardiola hailed his FC Barcelona side's "great intensity", VfB Stuttgart's Christian Gross their exhilarating pace, but in the end one man dominated both coaches' thoughts – Lionel Messi. After Messi scored two and set up another goal in the 4-0 win at the Camp Nou, Gross compared the 22-year-old to Diego Maradona while Guardiola called him "simply the best".
Josep Guardiola, Barcelona coach
We took to the pitch with great intensity and were aggressive in our approach; we never allowed any time to think. Physically we are a small side but with the backing of our supporters we feel so big. My intention [with Zlatan Ibrahimović] is to get the absolute best out of him; he took my decision to put him among the substitutes well.
I was delighted with Thierry Henry after the weekend win against Valencia [CF]; he is at his best when he's on the wing but I still want more from him. He played well today [in a more central role] but I want more aggression in front of goal. [Messi] is simply the best. Every team in the quarter-finals is strong and when we get there we'll have to produce two excellent games in order to advance.
Christian Gross, Stuttgart coach
We were missing the bravery which served us so well three weeks ago. With a better defensive performance we could have neutralised their midfield and given ourselves a chance. They were playing in front of their supporters and they are so strong, both individually and collectively. Maybe the fact Real Madrid were eliminated gave Barcelona extra motivation.
Our chances [of going through] were always limited. They started coming at us so quickly and we tried our best to stay with the pace. [Messi] is the best player in the world; he's a fantastic talent and it's incredible to think he's only 22. It's fair to compare him to Maradona.

Puyol warns Barça's best is to come
Published: Wednesday 17 March 2010, 22.59CET
If FC Barcelona's potential UEFA Champions League quarter-final opponents thought they had peaked with Wednesday's 4-0 defeat of VfB Stuttgart, Carles Puyol warned that the holders can play even better. "We've got some of our old sensations back and we feel the best is yet to come," the defender said after completing a 5-1 aggregate success. "I'm really happy because tonight we played well; we've got a great squad here. We're fighting for very important titles on two fronts now."

Barcelona berdepan laluan sukar pertahan kejuaraan
2010/03/20
– AP

Ibrahimović out of Arsenal decider
Published: Saturday 3 April 2010, 23.43CET
Scorer of two goals in the first leg, Zlatan Ibrahimović will miss the climax of FC Barcelona's UEFA Champions League quarter-final with Arsenal FC on Tuesday after sustaining a tear in his right calf.

FC Barcelona will be without Zlatan Ibrahimović for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final with Arsenal FC on Tuesday after the forward suffered a small tear in his right calf.
The 28-year-old had been scheduled to start the club's Liga encounter with Athletic Club on Saturday – which Barça won 4-1 – only to pull out through injury during the pre-match warm-up, with tests later revealing the extent of the injury. The Swedish international struck twice as the Azulgrana earned a 2-2 first-leg draw in London and, in addition to the return encounter with the Gunners, could also miss next Saturday's league meeting with fellow title contenders Real Madrid CF.
Already suspended for the Arsenal game, Gerard Piqué is another doubt for the Clásico with Madrid after he suffered a right thigh tear against Athletic. Jeffrén (calf) and Yaya Touré (bruised ankle) also picked up knocks in that match as Barcelona took a three-point lead at the Liga summit, and both players are expected to undergo treatment.

Barça want triumph, not tributes
Published: Monday 5 April 2010, 20.32CET
Josep Guardiola hopes FC Barcelona will be praised for ousting Arsenal FC rather than for the quality of their football, while Arsène Wenger urged his players to "make history".
FC Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola wants his side to be remembered for finishing the job against UEFA Champions quarter-final rivals Arsenal FC, and not just for their sparkling football in the 2-2 first-leg draw. He expects the Camp Nou encounter to be "like a final", while Arsène Wenger urged the Gunners to "make history".
Josep Guardiola, Barcelona coach
We have to play to win the match and we know how difficult that will be. We're in the quarter-finals against a team that reached the semi-finals last season, with good players – players who can play in different positions, who are very fast and only a few points behind Chelsea in the Premier League. Walcott concerns me because of his speed. He played very well against us and also this weekend.
I hope the stadium will be full because it's the most important match of the season. I think it'll be an attractive match for everyone, either at the stadium or watching at home. We will try to keep the ball and play simple football. I don't know who has the upper hand after the first leg. It's going to be like a final and we will see. We need to reach the semi-finals, otherwise people will just remember, yes, Barcelona played a good first half in London.
Arsène Wenger, Arsenal manager
When you don't have the ball, you can't play, especially against Barcelona. We have to make the pitch smaller. Of course, half of the battle will be in the midfield; we will especially have to watch out for Xavi. I think the first leg was exciting and the second leg promises to be more so. Personally I would like goals as soon as possible and to take advantage of Barcelona's weaknesses and I have a team that never gives up and has exceptional mental strength.
Barcelona could be disappointed about us coming back in the first leg, but for us the key is to start strongly tomorrow. I think we have won everywhere in Europe except here. Life is about grabbing opportunities and we can make history tomorrow if we can do that. I know we will fight for it and I have always defended the team through tough parts of the season. I don't think about Henry scoring the winning goal against his former club. Henry can also score own goals if he wants. He's not the only player who can score, but we have to concentrate on ourselves.
Team news
Barcelona
Out: Zlatan Ibrahimović (calf)
Doubtful: Jeffrén (calf), Yaya Touré (bruised ankle), Andrés Iniesta (thigh)
Suspended: Carles Puyol, Gerard Piqué
Misses next match if booked: none
• Guardiola has included Iniesta in his squad, with the midfielder looking to make his first appearance since he picked up a thigh injury on 27 March. "He still hasn't trained with the squad, so we will see how he feels and what he thinks about playing," said the coach.
• Ibrahimović suffered a tear in his right calf during the warm-up to Saturday's Liga 4-1 win against Athletic Club, with his replacement Bojan Krkić scoring twice.
• Guardiola backed Thierry Henry to shine if selected, though underlined that "he's been having problems with his calf muscle for a while now".
Arsenal
Out: Aaron Ramsey (broken leg), Robin van Persie (ankle ligaments), Kieran Gibbs (broken metatarsal), Johan Djourou (knee), Cesc Fàbregas (leg), William Gallas (calf), Andrey Arshavin (calf), Alex Song (right knee)
Doubtful: Sol Campbell (hamstring)
Suspended: Cesc Fàbregas
Misses next match if booked: Gaël Clichy, Robin van Persie, Abou Diaby
• Defensive midfielder Song was ruled out after scans on Sunday revealed inflamed knee cartilage. "It was a bad surprise," said Wenger.
• The Frenchman also expressed doubt as to the availability of centre-back Campbell. "We don't know if he's available yet with a hamstring problem," he said, meaning Mikaël Silvestre may start.
Weekend results
03/04/10 Barcelona 4-1 Athletic Club
(Jeffrén 27, Bojan 40 59, Messi 67; Susaeta 77)
• Bojan took his chance to shine after Jeffrén had scored his first senior goal, while Lionel Messi also found the back of the net for the first time in four outings.
03/04/10 Arsenal 1-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers FC
(Bendtner 90+4)
• Nicklas Bendtner's header broke the resistance of Wolves, who had been reduced to ten men since the 66th minute, and kept Arsenal within three points of league leaders Chelsea FC.
Background
• Arsenal have gone through in all but one of their six past two-legged meetings with Spanish sides.
• Barcelona have drawn four and lost one of their last five games against Premier League visitors.
• The Azulgrana are looking for their 11th semi-final appearance in the European Champion Clubs' Cup, while Arsenal are targeting their third.
Team Ties
• Guardiola captained Barcelona against Arsenal in the 1999/2000 group stage, drawing 1-1 at home and winning 4-2 at Wembley, with Henry a second-half substitute for the Gunners in both legs. Puyol was on the bench at Wembley.
• Henry remains Arsenal's record league scorer with 174 goals in 254 appearances and 226 in 369 matches overall from 1999 to 2007.
Did you know?
• Even before their 1999 encounters, Guardiola played against a Wenger-coached AS Monaco FC side in the 1993/94 group stage. Guardiola's side won 2-0 at home and 1-0 away, but both teams went through only to lose to AC Milan – Monaco in the semis and Barcelona in the final.

Published: Tuesday 6 April 2010, 13.22CET
Goalkeeper Víctor Valdés tells UEFA.com he is "very confident" FC Barcelona will make their away-goal advantage tell as they prepare to meet Arsenal FC in the second-leg of their quarter-final.
In an exlusive interview with UEFA.com, FC Barcelona goalkeeper Víctor Valdés says the first half of last week's UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg against Arsenal FC was possibly the best he has seen his side play and adds that he is "very confident" that after a commanding performance in London the holders will finish the job tonight at Camp Nou.
UEFA.com: Will Barça knock Arsenal out of the Champions League?
Víctor Valdés: I'm confident that we will. Very confident, yes.
UEFA.com: What kind of match do you expect?
Valdés: Maybe a similar match to the one we played in London. We know we can play very good and nice football at home. Champions League matches are always unpredictable, often they are decided by small details and I hope that these small details are in our favour.
UEFA.com: What were your feelings after the first leg against Arsenal?
Valdés: Well, those feelings are a bit strange, because we played a very good game. Maybe the result doesn't reflect the game or our performance well. But to get a 2-2 draw away in the Champions League and take it back with you for the home game is not a bad result. We have to decide the match here in Camp Nou, but generally the feelings are good.
UEFA.com: For you as a player was that the best first half you've ever seen?
Valdés: Well, possibly. There have been many games with this team, since Guardiola took over, where we've controlled the ball very well. And [in London], well, I don't think Arsenal put pressure on our first creative phase, not in the way they should have pressured us. That gave us a small advantage, to be able to create scoring opportunities.
UEFA.com: Barça had a lot of possession and there were many chances at the other end. You have to keep yourself very focused ...
Valdés: Yes, but we are used to it from a young age here at Barça. There is the same trend in the majority of games and that's why that's normal for us. The most important thing for a Barça goalkeeper, or any goalkeeper, is to stop shots, that's our job, but certainly, yes, sometimes there are few chances to deal with in a game and you have to concentrate very hard.
UEFA.com: Tell us about Arsenal's first goal, it slipped underneath you ...
Valdés: It was a strange situation. It was a hard and fast shot and maybe I didn't expect Walcott to shoot, but you have to get back up afterwards and concentrate on the rest of the match.
UEFA.com: Your opposite number Manuel Almunia kept Arsenal in the game in the first-half in London ...
Valdés: Well, he's a very good goalkeeper and he has been showing that over the years playing for Arsenal. I also played him in his few years in Catalonia. I believe he's a very good goalkeeper who has shown his quality.
UEFA.com: The second leg against Arsenal might be the game of the season. Do you agree?
Valdés: Well, yes, we're playing to stay alive in the Champions League. Regardless of the result, this will be a difficult game, because they are also a team that like to have possession of the ball.

Bojan hoping to give Gunners both barrels

Hopeful of filling in for the injured Zlatan Ibrahimović, FC Barcelona forward Bojan Krkić has warned Arsenal FC to expect another attacking display in Tuesday's quarter-final decider.

Bojan Krkić has warned Arsenal FC to expect another whirlwind attacking display in Tuesday's UEFA Champions League quarter-final decider at the Camp Nou, with the young FC Barcelona forward hoping for the chance to make his mark.
A goalless stalemate would suffice to send the European champions through to the last four after they secured a 2-2 draw in London last week, but that is unlikely to be the scoreline targeted by Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola. Having thrilled neutrals with their ability to penetrate the Gunners' rearguard only to let their hosts back into the game, the Azulgrana will be eager to make the tie safe as early as possible.
"It'll be the kind of match where we will have to play attacking football and I think that if we do just that, then we will win," said Bojan, an unused substitute in the English capital. "This is our most important game [of the season]; there's a lot at stake and we will be at 100%."
With the hosts bent on driving forward and Arsenal even more obliged to carve out routes to goal, the 19-year-old is predicting another entertaining feast of football. "It's a great match, one to enjoy," he explained. "I think it's a magnificent scenario. Arsenal will come here to win the match; they need to score and I'm sure they will also plan to play attacking football, because they need the goals."
Whether Bojan is handed the chance to take part is another matter, however, although he did his cause plenty of good with two goals in Saturday's 4-1 Liga victory against Athletic Club, having been drafted in at the last moment after Zlatan Ibrahimović injured his right calf in the warm-up. With the Sweden striker ruled out of Tuesday's contest, Bojan is clearly hoping to get the nod.
"The other day I played a great match and maybe I stand a chance of playing tomorrow," he said. "If I do get to play, I won't be scared. I'll enjoy every minute of it and I'll do all I can for the good of the team. The other day I felt comfortable playing in attack and I'm ready to play in any position the coach feels he wants me to play in."
This is a crucial time of the season for Guardiola's charges, with the defeat of Athletic ensuring they remain tied at the top of the Liga standings with Real Madrid CF ahead of Saturday's much-anticipated Clásico at the home of their great rivals. Despite that looming fixture, Bojan insisted that Arsenal are the only side occupying Barça minds. "Saturday's game will come along, but tomorrow is an extremely important match for us and we're fully concentrated on that," he said.

Bojan stars as Barça shine

Bojan Krkić took his chance to shine by scoring twice as FC Barcelona moved three points clear in the Liga, for 24 hours at least, with a 4-1 defeat of sixth-placed Athletic Club at Camp Nou.
Drafted into the starting XI as a last-minute replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimović, who suffered a calf injury in the warm-up, the 19-year-old took centre stage after Jeffrén (27) had scored his first senior goal. Bojan's opener five minutes before half-time was a cool finish after Carles Puyol had seized on possession and played in the striker, while his second owed more to ferocity as he fired Eric Abidal’s cutback into the roof of the net.
Lionel Messi made it four when he turned in Pedro Rodríguez’s inviting cross midway through the second half before Markel Susaeta (77) denied the Azulgrana a clean sheet. The victory means that whatever happens when Real Madrid CF visit Real Racing Club on Sunday, the stage is set for an engaging Clásico between the title rivals at the Santiago Bernabéu next Saturday. Before then, however, Josep Guardiola's team must overcome Arsenal FC in the deciding leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday, with the tie level at 2-2.
Further down the table, Sevilla FC lifted themselves to fourth – ahead of RCD Mallorca's trip to UD Almería on Sunday, anyway – with their first victory in six Liga outings, beating CD Tenerife 3-0 thanks to goals from Frédéric Kanouté, Luis Fabiano and José Carlos. Lastly, Real Zaragoza eased their relegation fears via a 2-0 success against Málaga CF, Leonardo Ponzio and Humberto Suazo doing the damage in the second half to haul the victors up to 15th, six points from danger.
