Messi joins exclusive club
Published: Wednesday 7 April 2010, 9.46CET
Since Lionel Messi was the sixth player in UEFA Champions League history to hit four goals in a game, UEFA.com ushers him into an exclusive club featuring the likes of Andriy Shevchenko.

FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi became the sixth player to find the net four times in a UEFA Champions League game during Tuesday's 4-1 quarter-final second leg defeat of Arsenal FC.
While the great Ferenc Puskás scored four goals for Real Madrid CF in the 1960 European Champion Clubs' Cup final, and Alfredo Di Stéfano just as many in Madrid's quarter-finals of 1958 and 1959, Messi joins a modern pantheon containing five other players to have achieved the feat in the UEFA Champions League era.
Andriy Shevchenko
(Fenerbahçe SK 0-4 AC Milan, 23/11/2005)
Istanbul represented the best and the worst of times for Milan in 2005. The Rossoneri lost the UEFA Champions League final to Liverpool FC in May, then six months later enjoyed one of their most impressive nights in the competition thanks in large part to Shevchenko. The Ukraine forward had missed the decisive spot-kick which handed Liverpool the UEFA Champions League trophy, but he helped make amends at the Şükrü Saracoğlu stadium with a brilliant four-goal burst that included a second-half hat-trick. Tellingly, though, Shevchenko said: "I would prefer to score one decisive goal in four different games than four in one."
Ruud van Nistelrooy
(Manchester United FC 4-1 AC Sparta Praha, 03/11/2004)
Only Raúl González, on 66, has registered more UEFA Champions League goals than Van Nistelrooy (56) so it is no surprise to find the former Dutch international on this list. Van Nistelrooy had netted a campaign-record 12 goals the season before and was at his ruthless best against a porous Sparta defence, punishing two poor back passes with cool finishes, converting a penalty and tapping in a stoppage-time fourth. "His record is unbelievable," United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said afterwards. "He's got to be the most clinical finisher I've seen. All the top strikers have loved playing in Europe – Cruyff, Di Stéfano, Müller – and Ruud relishes this stage too."
Dado Pršo
(AS Monaco FC 8-3 RC Deportivo La Coruña, 05/11/2003)
Pršo only made the Monaco side because of injury to Fernando Morientes, yet how he grabbed his chance on his 29th birthday. The Croatia striker's booty was the fastest four-timer of the bunch – featuring a first-half hat-trick – with his first goal coming in the 26th minute and his fourth 23 minutes later. "Dado was magnificent," Monaco winger Jérôme Rothen told UEFA.com. "Everyone was worried about Fernando being out but we showed we have the players to cope." Monaco went all the way to the final on the back of an extraordinary game that still boasts the most goals of any UEFA Champions League match.
Simone Inzaghi
(S.S. Lazio 5-1 Olympique de Marseille, 14/03/2000)
Having walked in elder brother Filippo's shadow for much of his career, Simone Inzaghi hogged the limelight during a memorable 1999/2000 campaign – firing Lazio to their second Scudetto as well as the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. One of the highlights for 'Inzaghino' was his quartet against Marseille. It could have been more but the Piacenza-born attacker missed a penalty and squandered another two presentable openings. Inzaghi would strike again, against Chelsea FC and Valencia CF, to take his seasonal tally to nine from 11 games in the competition, but he could not prevent Lazio bowing out to the Spanish club in the last eight.
Marco van Basten
(AC Milan 4-0 IFK Göteborg, 25/11/1992)
On his penultimate European Cup outing, Van Basten gave Milan fans one last thing to remember him by. Having already notched four against SSC Napoli in Serie A earlier that term, the Netherlands centre-forward repeated the trick here, with the pick of his ensemble being the bicycle kick that completed his hat-trick. The masterclass was the prelude, by days, to Van Basten winning his third Ballon d'Or, a treble equalled only by Johan Cruyff and Michel Platini.

Re: TO ALL BARCELONA FANZ !!!!!!!!!!
uardiola salutes red-hot Messi
Published: Tuesday 6 April 2010
FC Barcelona boss Josep Guardiola said Lionel Messi was "on fire" after his four goals in the 4-1 win against Arsenal FC while Arsène Wenger called the No10 "the best in the world".
Josep Guardiola heaped praise on his FC Barcelona side after a 4-1 win against Arsenal FC secured the holders' passage into the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. However, he reserved a special mention for Lionel Messi – who scored all the home team's goals at the Camp Nou – saying that the Argentinian international was "on fire". Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger conceded the hosts were the better side and paid tribute to Messi, but was also frustrated the visitors let an opportunity slip after Nicklas Bendtner had given them an early lead.
Josep Guardiola, Barcelona coach
We had more possession but things were still very dangerous for us. When we drew level it calmed us down a lot and we became more aggressive in defence. We are exceptionally happy with what we managed to do. Each player knows exactly what he has to do and right now we are playing with more intensity than ever; we were even putting pressure on [Manuel] Almunia in the 80th minute.
[Messi] was on fire tonight – so decisive. He demonstrated what a star he is. For the rest of the night and tomorrow we are going to enjoy this win while Thursday and Friday we will concentrate on the Madrid game. I'd like to congratulate not only the team but also this institution because in five years we've competed in four [UEFA] Champions League semi-finals and that speaks very highly of the club.
They had absentees which was a problem for them. We have time to prepare for Inter. The group games [against Inter] were difficult. We are confident of playing good football and continuing to show that to Europe and the world.
Arsène Wenger, Arsenal manager
We lost to a team who are better than us and against the best player in the world, but we had opportunities. The regret we have on the night is that at 1-0 we had great opportunities to score a second goal and over the two games we gave cheap goals away. At 1-0 we had a good counterattack but made the wrong choice but defensively we basically gave them the goals.
When there's players like Messi then you can pay for any mistake. He's the best player in the world by a distance. The difficulty with him is that he's not always in the game but when he's in it he's really dangerous. Once he's on the ball he's unstoppable; he's the only player who can change direction at such a pace. We battled and came back. We started well and at 3-1 we had chances to come back to 3-2, especially when Nicklas hit the post. We missed a few opportunities when we could have been more dangerous, but congratulations to Barcelona. They were better than us.

'El Clásico' triumph puts Barça in charge
Published: Saturday 10 April 2010, 23.55CET
FC Barcelona took a sizeable step towards reclaiming their Liga crown thanks to a 2-0 victory over Real Madrid CF that leaves them three points clear of their arch rivals at the summit.

FC Barcelona completed the double over Real Madrid CF in the latest instalment of 'El Clásico' with a 2-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu that gives the Spanish titleholders a three-point cushion at the top of the Liga.
Having laid down a marker in their UEFA Champions League defence with a comprehensive quarter-final victory over Arsenal FC in midweek, Barça's next task was to show similar intent in the league. It was man of the moment Lionel Messi who set the wheels in motion on 33 minutes, the Argentinian collecting Xavier Hernández's delightful pass with his chest before cutting inside Raúl Albiol and poking past Iker Casillas for his 40th goal of the campaign.
Xabi Alonso and Messi's international team-mate Gonzalo Higuaín spurned Madrid's best openings of the first half, and they were soon made to pay after the interval. The second period was 11 minutes old when Pedro Rodríguez benefitted from another perfect Xavi pass and stroked past the advancing Casillas. The home goalkeeper produced two fine saves to prevent Messi salting Real's wounds, but it was still very much Barcelona's evening as they inflicted a first home league defeat of the season on their hosts.
Sevilla FC had earlier enhanced their claims for a top-four finish with a 2-1 victory at Málaga CF. It was not all plain sailing for the Andalusian side, though, Felipe Caicedo putting Málaga in front on 15 minutes. Sevilla had to wait for the midway point in the second half for Juan Cala to equalise and it was not until five minutes from time that Lolo struck the winner.
At the other end of the table, bottom-placed Xerez CD are seven points adrift of safety having lost 1-0 at home to Getafe CF, who ended the game with ten men. Just two points better off than Xerez are Real Valladolid CF, who drew 0-0 at CD Tenerife, while Villarreal CF are sixth having beaten Real Sporting de Gijón 1-0 thanks to Diego Godín's 16th-minute goal.

The goals
0-1, Messi (min 32)

Massive step towards the title (0-2)
Roger Bogunyà
Barca took a massive step towards retaining their league title with a 0-2 win over Madrid at the Bernabeu tonight. Goals from Messi and Pedro saw off the challenge from Madrid and left Barca three points ahead at the top of the table.
Xavi Hernandez set up Leo Messi to open the scoring just past the half hour mark and then split open the Madrid defence to release Pedro to wrap up the game on 56 minutes. Madrid had their chances too, but Victor Valdes was at his best to keep out Van der Vaart, Ronaldo and Marcelo with another excellent performance.
The team maybe didn’t reach the heights of last season’s 2-6 demolition, but their efficiency in front of goal, an inspired Xavi and a solid Victor Valdes ensured the three points and put them in the driving seat for another league title.

Barça's secret weapon

Pedro Rodríguez crowned a memorable year with FC Barcelona's winner in the FIFA Club World Cup final and the 22-year-old revelation tells uefa.com of his plans for further success in 2010.

Pedro Rodríguez crowned a memorable year with FC Barcelona's winner in the FIFA Club World Cup final against Club Estudiantes de la Plata last month. The 22-year-old only made his first start for Barça last season, but still came on as a substitute during the UEFA Champions League final triumph in Rome. This season the latest star turn off the production line at the club's vaunted academy is fast proving himself a key part of the squad. Dubbed Barça's "secret weapon", Pedro has scored 13 goals in all competitions, including the winner in the UEFA Super Cup in August, and here offers his insights on a remarkable year for himself and his team.
uefa.com: You have been one of the big surprises of the season for Barcelona and in the Liga in general. Did you imagine you would be playing so often?
Pedro Rodríguez: No, because it's so difficult to get a look-in with the fantastic players we have. To play even a few minutes here is an absolute privilege and you have to take advantage of every single moment on the field. Things have happened so quickly for me, but I'm taking it all in my stride. I've had the opportunity to live through beautiful and unforgettable moments with Barça, but I know I must keep working hard to continue getting chances in the first team.
uefa.com: What are your memories of last season's historic campaign?
Pedro: It was fantastic. We played a lot of exceptional games and ended by winning the treble, which had never before been achieved in Spain. I experienced unforgettable times that I wouldn't change for anything.
uefa.com: Furthermore, coach Josep Guardiola seemed to get on really well with you …
Pedro: I was so thrilled when he allowed me to play the last few minutes of the UEFA Champions League final. I think that was his way of saying thank you for the hard work put in by all of the youth-team players during the year. I won the lottery and was the one who got the chance and I am so grateful, even though I didn't quite manage to touch the ball!
uefa.com: You first teamed up with Guardiola with Barcelona 'B' so you may be one of the players who knows him best. What is he like as a coach?
Pedro: Very detailed. He talks a lot with you and helps you so much in terms of tactics and personal improvement. That really makes a difference. He ensures we continue working hard so we don't fall into a comfort zone.
uefa.com: Is this Barcelona team capable of winning another treble? Is that discussed in the dressing room?
Pedro: We're not thinking about that at all, especially as there is so much of the season still left to play. We're playing well and are still involved in all competitions. The team is playing at the same level or maybe even a little better than this time last year so we'll see at the end of the campaign what we have managed to achieve.
uefa.com: Does it make it easier with players like Xavi Hernández and Andrés Iniesta alongside you?
Pedro: It's a great honour to play alongside those guys. They are exceptional players who play at the very highest level and who can decide games with one moment of magic. For someone like me it's a pleasure just to train with them, let alone play on the same pitch. We've got a really good group and an excellent feeling inside the dressing room. We're working well and are still going in all competitions. We must continue on that path.
uefa.com: As a former youth-team player it must feel very special to see Barcelona players that have travelled the same path as you being named as candidates for the Ballon d'Or. Do you feel involved in these successes?
Pedro: Players here have won prizes for their quality and huge efforts on the pitch. The team plays a role for sure, but the individuals themselves are mostly responsible for what they have won. We are very happy to have an important youth team that feeds the first-team squad. Every player involved with the youth set-up has that work ethic and realises they can reach the next level, especially because Guardiola is the first-team coach; he really knows the youth teams. All this results in a confidence boost for the young guys.

Guardiola's star pupil graduates in style

Pedro Rodríguez's winning goal in the UEFA Super Cup belied the rookie status of a 22-year-old striker currently enjoying his breakthrough campaign with FC Barcelona.

Name: Pedro Rodríguez
Club: FC Barcelona
Debut: 12/01/08 v Real Murcia CF (Liga)
Position: striker
Nationality: Spanish
Date of birth: 28/07/87
At the time Josep Guardiola was named Barcelona reserve team coach in 2007, Pedro's future at the Camp Nou looked uncertain. He seemed closer to a loan move away from the club than to a first-team summons. Guardiola, though, liked what he saw and under his guidance the Tenerife-born forward blossomed. A promotion to the senior squad soon followed as Pedro made his debut on 12 January 2008.
When Guardiola took charge of the first team the next season, Pedro went with him and, though used sparingly, he tasted the big time as a substitute in the UEFA Champions League final victory against Manchester United FC last May.
Going into the current campaign, Pedro had made only four Liga starts and as many substitute appearances, yet his apprenticeship had been served. He quickly established himself, beginning with his first Barcelona goal in the Spanish Super Cup victory over Athletic Bilbao, then scoring the extra-time winner against FC Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Super Cup.
His season's tally now stands at 16, including another important strike in the FIFA Club World Cup triumph over Estudiantes de la Plata, which confirmed him as the only player to score in all six competitions in the same year: UEFA Champions League, Spanish Liga, Copa del Rey, UEFA Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
Pedro's attitude, professionalism, consistency, finishing and confidence have benefited from Guardiola's influence, and the striker has become a popular member of the squad – not least for his willingness to chase lost causes and harass the opposition. Fast on the ball, he reminds some of former Blaugrana favourite Ludovic Giuly in his ability to get behind a full-back.
Breakthrough game:
Barcelona 1-0 FC Shakhtar Donetsk (aet)
28/08/09 UEFA Super Cup
Breaking into a side that had just won the UEFA Champions League and a domestic double represented no small task, but Pedro made a strong case with the extra-time winner in Monaco. Introduced as an 81st minute substitute, he soon hit his stride, exchanging passes with Lionel Messi before firing a low shot past Shakhtar goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov.
He says:
"To play even a few minutes here is an absolute privilege and you have to take advantage of every moment on the pitch. Things have happened quickly for me, but I'm taking it all in my stride. I've had the opportunity to experience beautiful and unforgettable moments with Barça, but I know I must keep working hard to continue getting chances in the team.

Talking to UEFA.com in December
They say:
"He's a very fast player who also helps out defensively by pressurising opponents, and his finishing is excellent. He's an unpredictable striker, and as a person he's first class. He's a very good person, very humble, and I hope he maintains that attitude which will only make him a better player than he already is."
Barcelona goalkeeper Víctor Valdés speaking to UEFA.com
"He's still young and still has things to learn. Little by little he's spending more time on the pitch and he's continuing to grow.He has helped us a lot and has a real eye for goal."
Barcelona coach Guardiola
"He was playing alongside men who could have been his father. The physical differences between him and the rest was so great that we called him the mascot."
CD Raqui San Isidro secretary Eugenio González remembers Pedro breaking into their first team aged 16.

Barcelona capped an unforgettable week by beating Real Madrid 2-0 in 'El Clasico' at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday to take pole position in the La Liga title race.
Victory allowed the defending champions to open up a three-point lead over Real at the summit with seven games left. Lionel Messi followed up his quadruple against Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-final win on Tuesday with the opener on 32 minutes for his 27th league goal of the season and 40th in all competitions.
Pedro Rodriguez struck the second on 55 minutes as Barca and their coach Pep Guardiola won their fourth consecutive Clasico and inflict a first home defeat on Real after a perfect 15 league wins.We have beaten Real Madrid who we have a lot of respect for. We can be better than anyone if we have the desire and work hard.
Barcelona great Lionel Messi after the Madrid win
"The title isn't won yet because there are some games left but this was a big step for us," said Messi. "We have beaten Real Madrid who we have a lot of respect for. We can be better than anyone if we have the desire and work hard."
Real had won 12 consecutive league games to go above Barca on goal difference in ther table and were out to avenge the 6-2 drubbing by their old rivals at the Bernabeu last season. However, treble winners Barcelona had other ideas and after reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League by swatting aside Arsenal they are now in the box seat to retain their title. Real must recover quickly as the league is their only hope of silverware and their fans will also fear seeing Barcelona lifting the Champions League in the May 22 final at their Bernabeu stadium home.
Real were boosted by the return of Sergio Ramos and Xabi Alonso from suspensions and both started. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who bagged the winner in the 1-0 Clasico win at Camp Nou in late November, had been ruled out for Barca so Guardiola chose to play without a recognised target man. Carles Puyol played at right back giving Dani Alves a more attacking role down the right wing with Messi having a free role in the centre.
Messi v Ronaldo draws a big crowd
A bumper 80,000-plus crowd packed in to watch the duel between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the two most recent Ballon D'or winners, and both were prominent early on. Messi, full of confidence after his four goals against Arsenal, went down on 11 minutes under the challenge of Raul Albiol but saw his penalty appeal turned away.
Ronaldo nutmegged Sergi Busquets only to over-run the ball and Gerard Pique cleared. With half an hour gone neither goalkeeper had been called into action but Barcelona made their first chance count. Messi played a neat one-two with Xavi before controlling the ball on his chest and firing past Iker Casillas. Real should have equalised with Alonso heading over from close range before Gonzalo Higuain blazed over when well-placed.
The second goal arrived on 55 minutes. Xavi released a terrific pass to Pedro who controlled brilliantly before accelerating away from Alvaro Arbeloa and curling the ball past Casillas. Real brought on Guti a minute after the second goal and the substitute produced a pinpoint pass for Rafael van der Vaart to go one-on-one with Victor Valdes but the goalkeeper defied the Dutchman with his legs.
Valdes denied Ronaldo on 65 minutes before Casillas pulled off two wonder saves to stop Messi getting what would have been his fourth league hat-trick of the season. Substitute Raul found the net in the final few minutes but the goal was ruled out for handball to sum up Real's miserable night.
Earlier Sevilla enhanced their hopes of a top four finish and Champions League football as they came from behind to win 2-1 at Malaga and move three points ahead of fifth-placed Real Mallorca. Elsewhere Villarreal beat Sporting Gijon 1-0 at home to move into the top six, a point above Athletic Bilbao.

World Cup legend Pele claims that all talk of Lionel Messi being the greatest player in the world must stop until the Argentine scores his 1000th career goal.GettyImagesPele: The greatest ever?

Pele is regarded as the best striker to have played the game, but is tired of seeing comparisons with his career and told theDaily Mail that Messi must first be viewed as the best player from his own country, ahead of Diego Maradona.
"They are always trying to compare someone to Pele," he said. "I always joke with my Argentine friends that they must first choose who is the best player from Argentina.
"Then, when one of them scores a thousand goals, then we can start talking."
However, the three-time World Cup winner did lavish praise upon the current FIFA World Player of the Year.
"Messi did not win the World Player award [in 2007], but I remember that I said to him, 'you'll be the next'," he said. "It took a little longer, but he eventually won. He's a great player.
"He plays very well for Barcelona, but has failed to show his talent with the Argentina team. Maybe he can at the World Cup. Let's wait and see.''
