Arsenal FC mounted an unlikely comeback in the final quarter to fight back from two goals down against FC Barcelona and keep alive their chances of reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in a pulsating contest.
The holders were at their scintillating best from the first minute, and only an inspired display from Manuel Almunia in the home goal kept the scoresheet blank at the break, only for Zlatan Ibrahimović to finally beat the goalkeeper with a fine chipped finish less than 60 seconds after half-time.
The same player doubled the advantage 13 minutes later but substitute Theo Walcott's 69th-minute effort brought the Gunners back into the contest. Five minutes from time they were level when Carles Puyol was sent off for bringing down Cesc Fàbregas, the Arsenal captain – who will miss next week's second leg after his booking here – making no mistake with the resulting penalty to level the tie.
Arsenal were buoyed by the inclusion of Fàbregas and William Gallas after injury, yet the home side were on the back foot from the first whistle and Almunia was quickly diving to his right to push away Sergio Busquets' first-time shot. That was only the beginning of the Arsenal goalkeeper's work, Almunia blocking Lionel Messi's shot with his left leg after a typically incisive run.
Barça kept coming, Ibrahimović shooting into the side-netting after racing through. Almunia then made two superb saves in quick succession from Ibrahimović and Xavi Hernández, Alex Song blocking Lionel Messi's volley on the line in a frantic passage of play. Bacary Sagna then headed over a goalbound shot from Pedro Rodríguez as the home team continued to chase shadows.
It was 21 minutes until Arsenal put together a move of note, Samir Nasri flashing a shot wide. Any momentum Arsenal were gathering was disrupted by injuries to Andrey Arshavin and Gallas, however, and the half ended on another negative note for Arsène Wenger's team with Fàbregas picking up the booking that rules him out of the second leg.
Less than 60 seconds after the restart Arsenal's night got even worse, Gerard Piqué playing a long ball for Ibrahimović to catch out the advancing Almunia with a perfectly judged chip from the angle.
Pedro came close to a second, and although Victor Valdés was called into action for the first time by Nicklas Bendtner's powerful header, instead Ibrahimović doubled Barcelona's money. Xavi's pass caught out the Arsenal defence and the Swedish striker thumped his shot past the exposed Almunia.
Wenger responded by replacing Sagna with Walcott and within three minutes the substitute had revived home hopes, sliding a shot under Valdés after good work from Nasri and Bendtner. Suddenly Barça found themselves under pressure, Piqué picking up a booking that also rules him out of the return, as Arsenal responded to exhortations to push forward.
That inevitably left extra space and Messi came close to exploiting it, only another fine Almunia stop denying the Argentinian. The home fans afforded Barcelona replacement Thierry Henry a generous reception on his introduction for Ibrahimović with 13 minutes remaining, and there was more to celebrate when Fàbregas was felled by Puyol, who was dismissed, the Arsenal captain smashing in the penalty to set up an intriguing second leg.

Leg break ends Fabregas's season
(PA) Thursday 1 April 2010
Cesc Fabregas' season is over after it was confirmed the Arsenal captain had suffered a small crack in his right fibula during the UEFA Champions League clash against Barcelona last night.
The Gunners captain had been a doubt for the game which ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw at Emirates Stadium, after suffering severe bruising to his knee and leg at Birmingham.
However, after coming through a fitness test in the warm-up, Fabregas returned to lead the side against his boyhood club, and played a pivotal role in their comeback after falling 2-0 down to a brace from Zlatan Ibrahimovic which looked to have all but killed off the tie.
During the closing stages, after substitute Theo Walcott had pulled a goal back, the Gunners skipper, who would have missed the second leg against his old club anyway after being booked in the first half, was bundled over by Carles Puyol and awarded a penalty.
It was during that collision with the Barcelona captain, who was shown a red card by Swiss referee Massimo Busacca, that Fabregas suffered the latest problem.
However, while Fabregas will miss the rest of the domestic season, the 22-year-old should still be fit for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ with Spain.
An Arsenal statement read: "Following a scan this afternoon, the club can confirm that Cesc Fabregas has suffered a small crack in his right fibula as a result of the collision with Barcelona defender Carles Puyol during Wednesday evening's match.
"As a consequence, Cesc will miss the remainder of the domestic campaign as he will be out of action for at six weeks. Everyone at the club wishes Cesc a full and speedy recovery."

Cesc Fabregas fears his season could be over after suffering a suspected broken leg during Arsenal's dramatic 2-2 UEFA Champions League draw against Barcelona at Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners skipper had been a doubt for the game after suffering severe bruising to his knee and leg during the Premier League game at Birmingham. However, Fabregas returned to lead the side, and played a pivotal role in their comeback after falling 2-0 down to a brace from Zlatan Ibrahimovic looked to have all but killed off the tie.
During the closing stages, after substitute Theo Walcott had pulled a goal back, the Gunners skipper - who would have missed the second leg against his old club after being booked in the first half - was bundled over by Carles Puyol and awarded a penalty. It was during that collision with the Barcelona captain, who was shown a red card by Swiss referee Massimo Busacca, that Fabregas suffered the latest problem which the Spain international believes could even end his season - and perhaps threaten a place at the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.I fear the worst, which is that I have broken something. I do not think it is going to be good news, but still I hope there will be.
Arsenal and Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas
"I am not good," said Fabregas, who left Emirates Stadium on crutches. "We have to wait for tomorrow, but I hope I can wear the Arsenal shirt again this season. I fear the worst, which is that I have broken something. I do not think it is going to be good news, but still I hope there will be.
"When I took the penalty, I was quite strong, but after when I went to get the ball, I could not walk any more. It is the fibula. I think I put my leg between Puyol's when I was fouled, and kicked it."
Fabregas added: "Until the penalty, I was feeling quite good. It has been an amazing experience and I will remember it for the rest of my life."
Barcelona dominated large parts of the match and Fabregas said he was delighted that his side had dug deep to keep the tie alive. "It was a very hard game to play in," said the midfielder, who joined Arsenal from Barcelona in 2003.
"It was one of the most difficult games we have ever played in and one of the most difficult games that the Arsenal fans have seen at the Emirates and at Highbury. It was very difficult because they have great players who are good on the ball. We knew it was going to be difficult but we showed character and courage and we are happy with the 2-2."

So frustrating to see that the injury list for Arsenal is getting lengthier. I haven't seen any team that is hit by injuries so hard and so long, all over the season. Really feeling sad for Cesc and Arshavin.

Arshavin will fill his spot with Arsenal and I don't think the Spanish will miss him if he can't play in the World Cup. Unfortunate for him but luckily for his two respective teams, he won't be missed much!

Leg break ends Fabregas' season
Cesc Fabregas' season is over after he suffered a small crack in his right fibula.
The Arsenal captain sustained the injury during the Champions League match against Barcelona on Wednesday night.
The Gunners captain had been a doubt for the match, which ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium, after suffering severe bruising to his knee and leg at Birmingham City.
However, after coming through a fitness test in the warm-up, Fabregas returned to lead the side against his boyhood club - and played a pivotal role in their comeback after falling 2-0 down to a brace from Zlatan Ibrahimovic which looked to have all but ended the tie.SMALL CRACK

"Everyone at the club wishes Cesc a full and speedy recovery."FULL ACTION
Fabregas left the Emirates Stadium on crutches on Wednesday night, and had admitted he feared the worst.
The news will be a devastating blow to the plans of manager Arsene Wenger, who had only just got his captain back into full action after a hamstring injury earlier in the campaign.
Wenger will also have to do without Russia playmaker Andrey Arshavin for up to three weeks after he picked up a calf problem against Barcelona and had to be substituted.
Defender William Gallas, meanwhile, also looks set to be unavailable for the remainder of the campaign after he broke down on his return following eight matches out with a calf injury.

Re: Arsenal The Gunners
Arsene Wenger accepts Arsenal played against a great side
"I respect what Barcelona did and you have to say they are a great side"
- Arsene Wenger
Wenger: We played a great team
Arsene Wenger conceded Arsenal were outplayed for long spells in the 2-2 draw against Barcelona.
The Catalans missed a host of chances in the Champions League quarter-final first-leg at the Emirates Stadium before a brace from Zlatan Ibrahimovic after half-time put them in control.
But Arsenal rallied and the introduction of Theo Walcott as a substitute proved pivotal as he pulled one back. Cesc Fabregas won a penalty for the Gunners after Carles Puyol brought him down and was sent-off. The captain scored against his former club to give Arsenal a fighting chance in the second-leg at the Nou Camp next week.
LONG SPELLS
It was put to Wenger afterwards that his side were outplayed for long spells, and he replied: "I don't deny that. They are an outstanding team but I believe that most of the shots on goal they had were in the first part of the game.
"At 2-0 we were in a position where you play against a great side and you have to throw everything forward. You know you can be caught with another goal."
The Frenchman admitted being dominated for long spells at the Emirates was difficult to swallow.
"It is not easy, believe me, but you respect it more than when you are kicked," he added. "I respect what Barcelona did and you have to say they are a great side.
"They won the European Cup, the [Spanish] championship, the [Spanish] Cup, and you can see why. I still believe that a part of their superiority was down to their inhibition at the start of the match. We gave them too much room in the first part of the game."

Fàbregas facing six weeks out

Arsenal FC have lost captain Cesc Fàbregas for the rest of the season after a scan confirmed the midfielder cracked his right fibula against FC Barcelona.
The 22-year-old suffered the injury when he was fouled by Barcelona defender Carles Puyol late in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League quarter-final in north London. Fàbregas picked himself up to convert the resulting penalty and earn a 2-2 first-leg draw, but promptly broke down and ended the match limping. He left the Arsenal Stadium on crutches.
A scan on Thursday afternoon revealed a small crack in the bone, meaning Fàbregas faces at least six weeks on the sidelines. He would have missed next week's return match in his native Catalonia in any case having collected a first-half booking that incurred a suspension. However, the Spanish international now misses the conclusion of his club's UEFA Champions League and Premier League campaigns.

ARSENAL 2-2 BARCELONA
Andrei Arshavin fears three-week absence
By Soccernet staff
April 1, 2010
Andrei Arshavin expects to be sidelined for between two and three weeks as a result of his calf injury sustained against Barcelona, ruling him out of the second leg at Camp Nou and an important period of Arsenal's season.

Andrei Arshavin was replaced by Emmanuel Eboue
• Broken leg fear for Fabregas
• Gallas to make World Cup
• Johnson: Gallas the critical blow
• Forum: Euro pain for English clubs
A fortunate 2-2 draw for the Gunners at Emirates Stadium was soured by injuries to three key players, most notably captain Cesc Fabregas, who could miss the remainder of the season due to a suspected broken leg.
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that defender William Gallas may also have played his last game this season after being stretchered off with a calf complaint and Arshavin was also substituted in the first half due to a fitness problem.
While Arsenal have made no official comment on the condition of the Russia international, Arshavin expects to miss the return leg, Premier League games against Wolves and Tottenham and possibly the first leg of the semi-final, should Barcelona be beaten at Camp Nou.
"Perhaps, I won't be able to come out on the pitch for another two or three weeks," Arshavin told his official website.
Arshavin departed the pitch with the score at 0-0 and was receiving treatment as Arsenal mounted a remarkable comeback to draw 2-2 having gone 2-0 down to two excellent goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Arshavin added: "Now I can say only one thing: Arsenal footballers, without doubt, showed their character."
Some injury respite has come in the form of Robin van Persie though as the striker is nearing a return from ankle ligament damage suffered in November.
Wenger said: "The latest news on Robin van Persie is very promising, but we have to wait two more weeks to integrate him fully into first-team training. Let's hope we can give him some big games to aim for at the end of the season."

PREMIER LEAGUE REVIEW
Premier League: Chelsea dent United, Gunners late show
By Soccernet staff
April 3, 2010
Chelsea surged to the summit of the Premier League with a 2-1 win at Manchester Unitedthat severely dented the capability of the defending champions to win their fourth successive title.

Chelsea celebrate a key win at Old Trafford that takes them two points clear at the top
Joe Cole's neat flick gave Chelsea an early lead that was doubled after substitute Didier Drogba scored a breakaway goal from a clear offside position in the 79th minute. When another sub in Kiko Macheda scored two minutes later with a possible handball, a grandstand finish was expected from United but never materialised.
• Harris: Rooney absence the decisive factor
• Palmer: Bendtner spares Walcott's blushes
To say United missed Wayne Rooney would seem obvious but this was an underpar performance from Sir Alex Ferguson's side and Chelsea continued the professionalism they have shown since their Champions League exit to Inter Milan.
Arsenal meanwhile, were made to wait for three points to keep them in the title race whenNicklas Bendtner scored a header in the 95th minute from a Bacary Sagna cross to claim a 1-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wolves will bemoan a Karl Henry sending-off that looked harsh but Arsenal had dominated possession despite being shorn of Cesc Fabregas, William Gallas and Andrey Arshavin and kept pushing to the very last whistle.
Tottenham Hotspur's challenge for the much-coveted fourth place and qualification for the Champions League may have been dashed on the rocks of a troubling 3-1 defeat toSunderland. Darren Bent scored the expected goal against his old club and then doubled Sunderland's advantage from the penalty spot.
However, he was twice granted the chance to again score from the spot but Heurelho Gomes twice saved his attempts. Bent was to have another goal chalked off in a further denial of his chances of getting a hat-trick. Peter Crouch scored with 18 minutes to play but a Bolo Zenden 86th strike took the game beyond Tottenham's reach.
Aston Villa belied the midweek rumour-mongering about the future of Martin O'Neill with a 1-0 win at Bolton Wanderers. Ashley Young scored a rare goal for the Villans as they were able to take advantage of Spurs' slip. A bad-tempered affair but a win for O'Neill's men will have gone some way to soothe the pain of last week's 7-1 loss at Chelsea.
In the end, Manchester City were the team able to seize the initiative with a 6-1 thumping of sorry Burnley. City were four goals up after twenty minutes after strikes from Emmanuel Adebayor, Craig Bellamy, Carlos Tevez and Patrick Vieira. Adebayor made it a 5-0 lead at half-time - a Premier League record.
Though many Clarets fans had departed the scene, a sizeable majority sang throughout and, after a Vincent Kompany header made it 6-0 the consolation strike from Steven Fletcher received a rapturous response. Burnley remain as deep in relegation trouble as the puddles of water that at one point seemed likely to lead to abandonment of the pitch.
Hull City will need all Iain Dowie's famed "bouncebackability" after a 2-0 defeat at Stoke Citythat handed West Ham a lifeline in the battle to stay in the division. The Hammers play Everton on Sunday but will be lifted by goals from Ricardo Fuller and Liam Lawrence that kept Hull in the relegation zone.
That result at the Brittania Stadium means that Portsmouth are staying up - for now. Their 0-0 draw with Blackburn Rovers was achieved despite the sending off of Anthony Vanden Borre for two bookable offences.

Super-sub Bendtner fires Gunners
Updated: April 3, 2010, 8:58 AM UKNicklas Bendtner came off the bench to head a dramatic stoppage-time winner and keep Arsenal's Premier League title dreams alive with a narrow 1-0 win over 10-man Wolves at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners - outplayed by Barcelona for large spells at home on Tuesday night - made seven changes to their starting XI as manager Arsene Wenger clearly had one eye on next week's Champions League quarter-final second leg at the Nou Camp. However, despite dominating the home side could not find a breakthrough until deep into five minutes of stoppage time.Wolves defended bravely and overcame the sending off of captain Karl Henry for a late challenge on Tomas Rosicky only to be denied when Bendtner headed in what could prove to be the young Dane's most vital strike yet.Bendtner also netted a last-gasp strike as the Gunners defeated Hull last month. The victory keeps Arsenal on the coat tails of Chelsea and Manchester United with five games remaining. After Chelsea went back to the top of the table with their controversial 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, Wenger knew there was little margin for error if Arsenal wanted to keep pace as the title race heats up.Theo Walcott - recalled to the team after his goal against Barcelona - weaved his way into the Wolves box after cutting in from the right, before chipping the ball back across goal where Eduardo forced goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann into a fine, one-handed reaction save.Wolves defender Michael Mancienne charged forwards and let fly from 25 yards, which was just off target.Arsenal went close again when Rosicky pulled the ball back through a crowded six-yard box to find Eduardo, but the Croatian could only stab the ball wide as he lost balance.Walcott then released right-back Bacary Sagna on the overlap into the Wolves penalty area, and his shot was blocked by Hahnemann. After 15 minutes, the French defender was in again, this time sliding to hook the ball to Emmanuel Eboue, whose attempted backheel hit his trailing leg.Arsenal continued to press, with Walcott testing Hahnemann with a 20-yard snap-shot after the ball dropped to him from a corner.Although it continued to be one-way traffic, Wolves remained solid.Rosicky created some space for himself on the edge of the area, but could only fire his shot high into the stands, while Denilson then drilled a low effort wide and Mikael Silvestre tested the Wolves goalkeeper again.Arsenal maintained the pressure at the start of the second half as Silvestre flashed a low centre across goal.Alex Song collected the ball 30 yards out and charged forwards, only to blaze his shot wide.Walcott continued to be Arsenal's main attacking outlet, but the home side lacked any real presence in the Wolves box.Eduardo volleyed wide after reacting quickly to a high ball.As the hour mark approached, Rosicky cut in from the right and fired a low, angled drive goalwards, which Hahnemann was again behind. There was still a threat from Wolves, though, as winger Matthew Jarvis flashed a couple of dangerous balls into the Arsenal six-yard box. After 66 minutes, Wolves captain Henry was shown a straight red by referee Andre Marriner for needlessly going through the back of Rosicky, who was facing his own goal in the centre-circle.The Czech midfielder needed treatment to his calf, but was soon back on the pitch and forced Hahnemann into another good reaction save before Bendtner stretched the American with a looping header.Rosicky cleared off the line as Sol Campbell deflected the ball towards his own goal following a Wolves corner.Arsenal sent on Mexican Carlos Vela to try to find a way through.Walcott stabbed a close-range effort wide during five minutes of stoppage time. Then, just when it seemed all over, Sagna whipped the ball into the six-yard box where Bendtner arrived to bullet a header past Hahnemann as the Emirates Stadium erupted.

Re: Arsenal The Gunners
Wenger: 'This win keeps us in the title race'
on a vital win...
It keeps us in the title race, yes. First it was important to forget Barcelona for 24 hours and focus on today's game, and that was not easy. But we did it well - I think we had a good focus. We were a bit jaded physically but we kept going and we were serious, we didn't make a mistake at the back. In the end we got a deserved victory against a resilient Wolves team who had a great goalkeeper. At the end of the day we kept it late as with many times but overall we deserved to win the game.
on all the late goals...
I put that down to our mental tenacity, our unity and the focus of the players who come on. Everybody works in the same direction. And as well, we take advantage of our technical superiority in the final part of the game, most of the time.
on playing against 10 men...
From outside I felt it became more difficult against 10 men because suddenly they dropped 10 yards and got everybody in front of their box. We were not so much anymore under the threat of conceding a goal but it looked difficult to create chances.
on Theo Walcott's late chance...
I was disappointed because I thought he was through but when I watched it again I saw that he had not so much time. But he missed contact with the ball.
on whether he thought a goal was coming...
No, no, but what I knew was that we would continue to go. But I was not certain we would score in the final minute of the game.
on what a draw would have done for Arsenal's title hopes...
Finished. You know if you're five points behind Chelsea with five games to go, you can forget it. But with three points it's feasible because we have a difficult programme but they have a difficult programme as well.
on giving themselves hope for Barcelona...
I don't deny it will be a difficult task. We have to raise above the impression Barcelona left on us in the first part of the match, to have a game plan and stick to it. I believe we have to be audacious and not hide. I do not deny in the first part of the game that Barcelona were over-dominant, but if you look at the chances we created, we had some good ones.
on Nicklas Bendtner's impact...
Bendtner is a player who can take critics. He responds well to it and has that strength. I believe he is improving, which is not unusual for a young player at 22. There is still room for improvement, but he is becoming more of a team player and is working hard. It is all positive.
on Walcott drifting in and out of the game...
It is difficult physically to run at the pace of a 100m runner and give always the right ball at that pace.
Also, it is difficult for a player to make 100m races 50 times. He is not a player who makes a burst of just five yards, he is a player who every time runs 30 or 40 metres, that takes a lot out of you, and when it comes to the situation when you have to cross the ball, he already has a big effort behind him. I do not know yet if he will start against Barcelona, because I have to study what I have to do. I have tomorrow and Monday, so I will have to see.
on whether 86 points will be enough for the title...
I believe so, that’s the only chance we have. I calculated how many games we have to play and how far we can go if we win all our games, 86, so I decided that 86 will do it!
on Karl Henry's sending off...
I must say I don’t believe he went to hurt the player. It was full power but I didn’t see any malicious intent. If he was sent off it’s just for a violent tackle.
on the investigation into Gallas' injury...
They make a story of it in France. It is now a situation where a club is not even any more in a situation when it can decide when it plays its players. They have the right to pay the players, but not when to play them. What I don’t understand, for example, I don’t disagree that I took a gamble on Gallas. But the player declares himself fit, the medical staff declared him fit, the rehabilitation centre declared him fit, but I still cannot play him because maybe France needs him in the summer in the World Cup. During which we pay him as well. You have to leave some freedom to the club to decide when they play their players.
I want the players to do well for the national team as well but the national teams have to accept as well that we lose the players like Robin Van Persie for the whole season, when he goes there for what? To play against Italy in Bari for a friendly when the stadium is half empty. And we lose him for the whole season. We pay him the whole season. They decided to play him. So when we play at home against Barcelona in the Quarter Final of the Champions League, we are still ostracised because we play a player who declares himself fit. That’s a bit too much.

on a vital win...
